This position qualifies for an annual Recruitment Incentive Package up to the value of $10,000 (conditions apply and may be pro-rata’d to your contracted or ordinary working hours, these payments are paid on a fortnightly basis) under the NSW Health Rural Health Workforce Incentive Scheme.

This scheme recognises the role key health workers play in enabling the delivery of rural and remote health services, and aims to provide incentives over and above award entitlements, to attract and retain staff in these areas.

The Cook provides an effective and efficient catering service including providing meals for patients and aged care residents and catering for functions while observing the principles of Nutrition and Health Standards.

About Wilcannia

Wilcannia is a small, primarily Aboriginal community in far west NSW situated on the banks of the Darling River. Once a busy river port, the town is full of history and heritage listed buildings. The outdoor cinema, music festivals and a bunch of local sporting opportunities including tennis, golf, lawn bowls and footy will keep you busy. In the heart of the Aussie Outback, life in Wilcannia is quiet, clean and beautiful.

The Wilcannia Multi-Purpose Service (MPS) has a 24-hour 2 bed emergency department and 8 residential aged care beds. Wilcannia MPS has been providing care to the local community for over 140 years.

How to apply
To be considered for this position, please ensure you address the selection criteria in the application as thoroughly as possible:

  1. Previous commercial catering experience or demonstrated ability to cook for large numbers and special diets.
  2. Certificate in Use of Hygienic Practices for Food Safety or willingness to obtain.
  3. Demonstrated Knowledge of Food Safety Act including Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) principles. Strong understanding of Work Health and Safety in the work place, including Infection Control principles and Manual Hazardous Tasks.
  4. Ability to work without supervision and as part of a team with the ability to work shift work, including early starts.
  5. Experience in stock control, ordering and rostering.
  6. Ability to work in culturally sensitive manner.
  7. Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills.

About Far West NSW Local Health District

Broken Hill, NSW, Australia

Bordering three states, Far West Local Health District (LHD) covers 194,949 square kilometres in remote NSW. The LHD is sparsely populated, with 62% of its approximately 30,000 inhabitants living in the Silver City of Broken Hill. The remainder of the population live in agricultural towns along the Murray River, in small remote communities of 80-800 people or on stations throughout the LHD. Far West LHD is the most sparsely populated LHD in NSW and has the highest proportion of Aboriginal residents (9.6%). The population is decreasing, ageing and experiencing significant morbidity related to lifestyle factors and chronic illness.
