A respected mining company with a significant presence in the Hunter Valley is seeking a Senior Mining Engineer, Medium-Term Planning to join its Technical Services team. This is a rare opportunity to lead planning for one of the region’s most complex open-cut coal operations, all while enjoying a lifestyle that keeps you home every night.
This role is offered on a Monday to Friday roster, with travel each day to site from Newcastle, the Upper Hunter, or surrounding areas.
About the Role
Reporting to the Medium-Term Planning Superintendent, you will lead a team of Mining Engineers focused on delivering high-quality mine designs, schedules, and medium-term planning outcomes. You’ll help shape the direction of site planning through collaboration, leadership, and continuous improvement.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading and mentoring a team of engineers responsible for the medium-term planning horizon.
- Delivering accurate, aligned mine plans that support budget, LOM, and operational targets.
- Engaging with short-term planning and operational teams to ensure successful plan execution.
- Identifying opportunities for innovation, system improvement, and greater planning efficiency.
- Providing strategic input across both open-cut and underground technical planning where relevant.
What You’ll Bring
You’ll combine technical capability with strong communication and leadership skills that help you collaborate and influence across departments.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or a related field.
- 5+ years’ experience in technical roles within opencut coal mining.
- Strong background in strategic and medium-term mine planning.
- Experience in both planning and operational mining roles.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and influence teams to deliver quality outcomes.
Technical Strengths:
- Proficiency in mine planning software such as Deswik, Spry, Vulcan or equivalent.
- High-level skills in mine design, scheduling, and planning system development.
- Strong data analysis, validation and problem-solving ability.
- Familiarity with relevant WHS legislation and industry standards.

- Strong time management, organisation, and stakeholder engagement skills.
