Nhulunbuy / Tennant Creek, Northern Territory (Multiple vacancies)
Two vacancies are available, one in Tennant Creek and one Nhulunbuy.
The Department of Trade, Business and Asian Relations focuses on driving investment and trade opportunities through international engagement (particularly in the Asian region). We also play an essential role to drive workforce development to support both small businesses as the engine room of economic growth and the larger emerging industry sectors.
We are inviting applications for two positions to manage key priorities in their respective regions, East Arnhem and the Barkly regions.
Both regions are at the forefront of transformational opportunity. Whether you’re driven by social equity, economic growth, or the chance to be part of something bigger, this is your chance to influence lasting change.
Why These Regions Matter:
In East Arnhem, the region is undergoing a once-in-a-generation transition as the Gove mine winds down and land is returned to Traditional Custodians. This creates a powerful opportunity to walk alongside community in shaping a new regional economy grounded in local aspiration, cultural authority, and sustainable development.
In the Barkly, the Barkly Regional Deal—Australia’s first place-based deal between all three levels of government—presents a platform for bold ideas, strong collaboration, and real results. From economic diversification to youth development, the groundwork is laid for meaningful progress.
As the Regional Manager you will be the Department’s lead representative in the region - bringing people, programs, and ideas together to solve complex challenges and unlock opportunity. You will lead and manage the regional team to support the sustainable growth, capability, resilience and competitiveness of the Territory’s business community through the provision of targeted grants, programs, licences, migration and workforce initiatives. You will actively build, maintain and collaborate with stakeholders to align policy, funding, and service delivery for maximum localised impact in the region.
To be successful, you will have demonstrated strategic management skills, with the agility to respond to changing situations to deliver results through the effective management of regional budgets and resources. You will have highly developed communication skills and leadership abilities to support and lead a strong culture of teamwork. Your knowledge, skills and ability in project management including the ability to consult and interpret the economic, political, social and commercial environment will enable you to succeed in the role.

Nhulunbuy, East Arnhem
The East Arnhem region is known for its beautiful beaches, amazing culture, relaxed lifestyle, and invigorating wildlife trails.
Nhulunbuy has all the facilities expected in a modern town, including three schools, a district hospital, two shopping centres, two childcare centres, restaurants, a large community library, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, multiple playgrounds, a skate park, play group, art centres and two large sporting ovals. It also hosts a Surf Lifesaving Club, Yacht Club and Golf Club with a nine-hole course.
To take advantage of the long summer, recreational activities are high on the agenda in Nhulunbuy. Several clubs offer a range of sports for both adults and children. The friendly social atmosphere makes it a place where residents and visitors can give anything a go.
Nhulunbuy is also home to the Garma Festival of Traditional Cultures, Australia’s largest Indigenous gathering. Hosted by the Yothu Yindi Foundation, the Garma is a 4-day celebration of Yolngu life and culture, showcasing traditional miny’tji (art), manikay (song), bunggul (dance) and story-telling.
Tennant Creek, Barkly Region
The outback of Australia - a vast land of brilliant blue skies and boundless horizons, this is the Barkly region.
The town of Tennant Creek is known as the Territory's heart of gold, a reference to the friendliness of its people and the area's rich gold mining history. It is roughly 500km north of Alice Springs and is located in between many of the Territory's best-known sights meaning there is plenty to explore and enjoy in the history-rich region. The town is at the intersection of two main highways, the Stuart and Barkly Highways, and is easily accessed via road, rail, bus and air.
Tennant Creek has an outback-town flavour, centred around one main street lined with trees and filled with locally owned stores. The area boasts country culture meets friendly relaxed living. Throughout the year there are many events in the region including the Desert Harmony festival, the Tennant Creek show, horse racing and rodeos, speedway, sports, art events and live music. Barkly Regional Arts also presents an exciting suite of events from trivia nights, art exhibitions and comedy shows.
These are more than jobs – they are an opportunity to contribute to something meaningful. If you want to make a difference, grow professionally, and live purposefully, we want to hear from you.
