What is the role?

Applications are sought from suitably qualified applicants wishing to be considered for Team Leader roles (Band 7) within Pacific Command, Australian Federal Police. A merit pool will be created for upcoming vacancies. These positions are Canberra based.

The AFP is a key contributor to the Australian Government’s Pacific Strategy. Pacific Command leads AFP’s engagement with Pacific Police partners with the primary focus to promote regional stability and to prevent and disrupt transnational crime threats. Pacific Command is responsible for delivering the Commissioner and Government’s strategic intent, with a significant focus on implementing the Pacific Policing Initiative to strengthen partnerships and boost capabilities across the Pacific. The team provides support to Pacific Command’s Senior Executives and supports the AFP’s engagement with domestic and international partners.

The Team Leader roles sit within the Pacific Strategy branch. You will support the delivery of Pacific Command’s objectives through the provision of corporate reporting and governance, policy and strategy elements of the command, as well as the provision of advice and briefings in support of Pacific-focussed forums and summits. You will also contribute to AFP’s mission and objectives in the Pacific in liaising with stakeholders across the AFP and government.

As a Team Leader in the AFP, you will play a pivotal role in developing people, managing change and influencing behaviours that lead to a supportive culture that respects the perspectives, talents and values of each individual. Consistent with the AFP values, AFP leadership philosophy, organisational reform agendas, AFP corporate business plans and your Performance Development Agreement.

What will you do?

To be effective as a Team Leader within Pacific Command, you will undertake and lead time-sensitive and complex work whilst supporting your team to deliver high quality briefings, project reporting, policy advice and other priorities as required.

You will:

  • Draft timely, accurate and concise briefs and advice on Pacific policing, for AFP Executive, government partners and other key stakeholders
  • Build and foster collegiate networks with government partners
  • Mentor and guide team members in developing policy advice
  • Support requirements associated with secretariat, project management and budget responsibilities associated with government-funded programs and projects
  • Assist with development of corporate and strategic priorities for Pacific Command in line with the broader AFP strategic direction
  • Prepare briefing materials to support the AFP’s advice to government, engagement in parliamentary processes and responses to media inquiries
  • Support a high performing team through individual career development and succession planning.

Essential Requirements

  • Leadership qualities and experience in mentoring, coaching and developing people
  • Experience in delivering strategic advice for senior executive and government
  • Experience in developing and fostering internal and external relationships and networks
  • The ability to work collaboratively and respectfully in a cross-cultural setting
  • Flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing priorities and compressed deadlines
  • Negative Vetting 2 (Top Secret) security clearance, or the ability to obtain one

Desirable Requirements

  • Experience in international relations/development, or national security policy and
  • An interest/understanding of the Pacific operating environment.

  • This role is an AFP Band 7 level
  • This role is based in Canberra and suitable applicants must be located in the ACT for the role, or relocate at own expense
