The Department

A 43 bed unit with an annual attendance of 45,000, a 30% admission rate and approximately 20% paediatric caseload. As the referral hospital for the entire north of Tasmania our registrars experience high acuity and clinical diversity. The hospital has all major specialties, including a fully supported ICU with ECMO capability and 24-hour cardiac interventional angiography. Consultants provide direct clinical supervision from 8am until midnight, seven days a week with an on-call service outside these hours.

Registrars within LGH ED

As an LGH ED Registrar, you will be immersed in personalised learning opportunities. The members of our FACEM group enthusiastically share their expertise in ultrasound, paediatrics, retrieval, disaster medicine, international EM, simulation, medical education and leadership. LGH ED has ACEM accreditation for 24 months of Emergency Training, including paediatric logbook and TS4. We run a successful primary and fellowship exam preparation program, with 2 consultants on the ACEM Board of Examiners. We have a 6-month Ultrasound Special Skills Placement, a 6-month anaesthetics rotation and the possibility of ICU and medical speciality rotations.

LGH ED is also accredited with ACRRM for Advanced Skills placements in Emergency Medicine and offers the ACEM Associateship Training programs.

Registrars get 4 hours of paid, protected teaching time each week, tailored to all stages of training. These teaching sessions include monthly focused paediatric teaching and sessions in our new simulation centre.

We have just finished negotiating the new Tasmanian Medical Practitioners Agreement, so the pay and conditions are better than ever before!

The role of Registrars:

1. To Initiate, maintain, and be responsible for, the clinical care of undifferentiated and unwell members of the community seeking our assistance.

2. To perform clinical work while being supported, trained and upskilled to become experienced and capable Emergency Specialists, Rural Generalists and Critical Care Specialists.

3. To engage with our dynamic department through education, learning and a passion for emergency medicine.

You will need

  • Sound knowledge of current practice in Emergency Medicine in Australia
  • Engagement in a relevant training college eg ACEM or ACCRM, or a plan to begin this journey
  • Demonstrated ability to provide services to emergency patients, including acute resuscitation skills
  • Experience in supporting a team of junior medical staff and students
  • Passion, skill and enthusiasm

For international applicant, you will also need:

1. at least 2 years experience working as a middle grade doctor or higher in an Emergency Department

2. successful completion of the AMC (Australian Medical Council) Part 1 exams and all other requirements to be eligible for AHPRA registration

3. to have had exposure to the Australian Health System, or a similar international health system

Details of appointment:

Multiple fixed term full or part time, shift-worker positions commencing from February 2026. In addition, Registrars will receive 10 hours of paid, protected training time per fortnight pro rata.

  • Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time and part time vacancies.

Salary:

Medical Practitioner Level 5 - 11 $134,930 - $189,005 per annum, pro rata + 11.5% superannuation + access to salary packaging

  • Salary range is in accordance with Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022
  • Relocation and commencement support for approved appointees.
  • Please note the salary range and superannuation is current at time of advertising.

In addition, the following allowances and benefit, calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available:

  • Salary packaging options include a range of benefits like living expenses up to $9,010 and $2,650 in meals and entertainment every year
  • Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $3183 per annum, pro rata
  • Travel and relocation assistance support available including economy interstate flights and short term accommodation assistance for contracts of 12 months duration.
  • A range of leave entitlements, including study leave and Professional Development Support.
  • Fitness Passport – You, and your family can access 40+ fitness facilities across Tasmania for just $13.95 per week per person, or $25.95 for a family.
  • other allowances as applicable.

Eligibility:

Eligibility: Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria as

  • General or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia
  • Current Working with Children Registration (where applicable and as determined by individual position requirements)

Applicants should note the following criteria are desirable:

  • Engagement in a relevant training program, such as ACEM or ACCRM or equivalent
  • Evidence of current Advanced Life Support or equivalent Emergency Life Support course certification and up-to-date resuscitation skills
