Role Overview

The Guidance Counsellor plays a key role in promoting student wellbeing and delivering proactive, preventative, and responsive support to enhance students’ academic, personal, social, and emotional development. The role involves working collaboratively with students, families, educators, and external agencies to uphold the holistic development of each learner, fostering a school culture of belonging, trust, and mutual respect.

The successful applicant will demonstrate cultural sensitivity, uphold Islamic values, and be committed to equitable, inclusive practices that support students from refugee, migrant, and faith-based backgrounds.

Purpose of the Position

The Guidance Counsellor will:

Lead and implement evidence-informed practices to support the wellbeing and educational outcomes of students.

Provide culturally and spiritually sensitive counselling and case management.

Work within the Islamic ethos of the school, promoting Islamic character and values in every aspect of student support.

Foster a school culture of safety, dignity, inclusion, and respect.

Key Responsibilities

Student Support and Advocacy

Provide individual and group counselling using trauma-informed and culturally responsive approaches.

Develop tailored student support plans in collaboration with teachers, parents, and allied professionals.

Advocate for student needs and create safe pathways for personal development, including identity, belonging, and career guidance.

Assessment and Intervention

Conduct assessments to identify learning, social-emotional, or behavioural needs and recommend intervention strategies.

Support the development of inclusive education plans, referrals to specialists, and engagement with community support services.

Faith-Based and Culturally Responsive Wellbeing Programs

Integrate Islamic values into wellbeing initiatives, character education, and resilience-building programs.

Support transition programs, particularly for new students or those from non-English-speaking or refugee backgrounds.

Deliver parent engagement workshops on student wellbeing and development in culturally appropriate ways.

Critical Incident Management

Assist in managing critical incidents and pastoral care responses through structured support systems.

Maintain and uphold AIIC's student protection and behaviour support frameworks.

Collaboration and Professional Learning

Work closely with Heads of School, Learning Support staff, and the broader wellbeing team.

Participate in regular supervision, Islamic and clinical professional development, and reflective practice.

Essential Requirements

Minimum 2 years’ experience in student wellbeing, counselling, or case management in school settings.

Relevant qualification and one of the following:

Full/provisional registration with the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT), OR

Full registration as a psychologist with AHPRA, OR eligibility following an accredited pathway.

Desirable Attributes

Demonstrated knowledge of child and adolescent development within multicultural and faith-based contexts.

High-level interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work with families from CALD backgrounds.

Strong understanding of Islamic principles and the ability to incorporate faith in a sensitive and appropriate manner.

Experience working with students from refugee and humanitarian backgrounds is highly regarded.

Ability to build trust and rapport with students while upholding professional boundaries.

Reporting and Relationships

The Guidance Counsellor will report to the Principal, Deputy Principal, Head of School and work collaboratively with campus leaders, the learning support team, and relevant community organisations.
