Sophia Mundi Steiner School offers a unique and holistic educational journey that integrates Steiner pedagogy with a commitment to academic excellence, artistic expression, and inner development. Located in the Abbotsford Convent precinct, our school nurtures curiosity, creativity, and compassion from Early Childhood through to Year 12, including the International Baccalaureate (IB) in the senior years.
We are seeking a Primary School Teacher who brings warmth, imagination, and a deep commitment to the developmental needs of the child in alignment with Steiner education.
Responsibilities
Commitment to Steiner Education: A strong understanding of Rudolf Steiner’s educational philosophy and a dedication to implementing it within a contemporary school setting.
Child-Centered Practice: Sees each child as a unique individual, supporting their growth through age-appropriate, integrated, and imaginative learning experiences. Guide the same class through multiple years (where applicable), fostering deep teacher-student relationships.
Inner Development: Actively engages in self-reflection and personal growth, understanding the importance of the teacher’s inner work in shaping the classroom atmosphere.
Creative and Artistic: Able to bring the curriculum to life through storytelling, music, movement, visual arts, and practical activities that nourish the whole child. Participate in festivals, seasonal celebrations, school excursions, and community events.
Classroom Leadership: Provides clear, loving authority and guidance, fostering a sense of rhythm, order, and security in the classroom. Develop and implement lesson plans aligned with the Australian Steiner Curriculum Framework.
Collegial and Collaborative: Works respectfully and constructively within a team of committed educators, contributing to shared planning and school life. Attend faculty meetings, engage in professional development, and contribute to the broader life of the school.
Effective Communicator. Consult, advise and liaise with students, parents, Faculty and School Leadership. Participate and contribute to the collegial environment, working alongside teaching and administrative staff.
Selection Criteria Knowledge and Skills
Appropriate qualifications, experience and competencies in Class 1-6 teaching.
Demonstrated ability in age-appropriate behaviour and classroom management.
A genuine interest in Steiner education and an understanding of how it contrasts with other contemporary educational practices
High level of oral communication and interpersonal skills, appreciating the importance of discretion, tact and confidentiality with public, parents, staff and students.
Demonstrated ability to present lessons imaginatively and artistically in a manner consistent with the Australian Steiner Curriculum Framework.
Demonstrated ability to incorporate a range of teaching and learning strategies and methods in the delivery of a quality programme that differentiates the content for a diverse range of abilities and learning styles.
Demonstrated ability to warmly relate to children, promoting motivation, enthusiasm and self-direction in learners.
Be willing to develop an understanding of the Australian Steiner Curriculum and its implementation through study, in-service and outside opportunities and, to participate in the mentor system in order to facilitate learning.
An ability to harmonise personal teaching philosophy with Anthroposophical concepts and ideas so that they are not in conflict.
Experience and desire to work collegially and effectively in group decision-making and able to modify points of view when necessary, according to collegial working processes.
An ability, enthusiasm and interest to communicate effectively, appropriately and discretely with parents, students and the wider community with a high level of verbal and interpersonal skills
Qualifications and Experience
Steiner/Waldorf Teacher Training (completed or in progress) or relevant Steiner teaching experience.
Full registration (or eligibility) with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT).
Experience or readiness to teach across the Primary years (Classes 1–6).
Demonstrated capacity to plan and deliver an integrated, developmentally aligned Steiner curriculum.
