Field Officer
Australian Bureau of Statistics
Posted 3 days ago
The Census is the most comprehensive snapshot of Australia and tells the story of how we’re changing. It helps us understand what we need now, and into the future.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) conducts the Census every five years, counting every person and household in Australia. The Census asks questions about age, country of birth, cultural background, living situation, work and education. The information is used to estimate Australia’s population, distribute government funds, and plan services for individuals, families and communities.
Before each Census, it’s important to test how we’ll run it to ensure we’re ready to deliver a positive, safe and secure Census that is easy to complete. The Census Test requires Field Officers in selected areas across Queensland, New South Wales and Western Australia.
About this role:
Field Officers represent the ABS and are the direct link between the Census and the public. They work in their local area, working a mix of weekdays, evenings and weekends. A Field Officer is responsible for delivering Census Test forms to households, collecting completed forms and following up households who have not responded. This is a crucial part in ensuring Census Test information is collected.
As a Field Officer, you will:

- Deliver Census Test letters and forms to households, and collect completed forms for secure return to the ABS
- Visit households to follow up with residents who have not successfully completed their Census Test
- Conduct assisted interviews with people who request help
- Conduct field work with safety and care and ensure the safety and wellbeing of yourself and others
- Use your own electronic device (smart phone or tablet) to record information and work completion
- Use your registered and insured vehicle for work
- Communicate regularly with your manager about issues and progress in your work area
- Complete administration forms and other duties as required
Key qualities and experience include:
- Ability to enter information into an application on a mobile device or tablet
- Highly organised to ensure scheduled routes and paperwork are managed
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to build rapport and relationships based on trust
- Ability to work in a team environment and individually
- Ability to follow instructions and procedures to ensure work is carried out accurately and safely
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and adapt to changing circumstances
- Aware of personal safety, especially when visiting unfamiliar neighbourhoods or households
- Ability to communicate sensitively and respectfully and consider different cultural backgrounds when communicating
