SMYL Community College is seeking applications from teachers with a keen desire to work with at risk students.

As a ‘Curriculum and Re-engagement in Education' (CaRE) School, SMYL Community College offer an individually constructed alternative education program under the School Education Act 1999 (WA) for 12 to 18 year olds.

All students referred to SMYL Community College experience significant barriers to education. Teaching and learning is adjusted and support services provided, to meet individual student needs. We utilise a collaborative case management model to find the most appropriate learning pathway for every student.

Successful candidate should possess a willingness to work at a range of campuses, depending on organisational requirements (negotiable arrangement).

Teachers at SMYL:

  • Know students and how they learn.
  • Know the content and how to teach it.
  • Plan for and implement effective teaching learning.
  • Create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments.
  • Assess, provide feedback and report on student learning.
  • Engage in professional learning.
  • Engage professionally with colleagues, parents/carers and the community.
  • Know and fully understand Therapeutic Crisis Intervention, Trauma-Informed Practices, Project-based Learning, Restorative Practices, Protective Behaviours and Differentiation practices.
  • Work collaboratively in a holistic team, to provide equitable access to educational opportunities for every student.
  • Complete all relevant records, including attendance, pastoral care notes, case notes, marks books, reports and correspondence with relevant stakeholders.

Applicants should meet the following selection criteria:

  1. Completion of a university-level Teaching qualification (recognized in Western Australia).
  2. Registration with the TRBWA.
  3. Demonstrated good oral, written and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective and collaborative working relationships.
  4. Demonstrated effective planning and organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities within timelines.
  5. Demonstrated good research, conceptual and analytical skills, including the ability to identify problems and provide solutions.
  6. Demonstrated skills and experience in working with individual or small groups of students experiencing difficulties.
  7. Demonstrated knowledge of the youth sector, particularly local organisations and services.
  8. Recent teaching experience.
  9. Clear understanding of holistic approaches within an educational setting.
