Practice Nurse - Dr Kieran Rowe - Brisbane Hand and Plastic Surgery

Are you a highly motivated and experienced Registered Nurse seeking a dynamic role in a leading private plastic surgery practice?

Our Practice is looking for a dedicated part time Practice Nurse to job share with an experienced practice nurse on Tuesday and Wednesdays. Joining our team at Greenslopes Private Hospital, Nicholson Street Specialist Centre. This permanent part-time position offers a unique opportunity to work closely with Dr Kieran Rowe, specialising in reconstructive, hand, aesthetic, and post-weight loss surgery, with a significant focus on skin cancer management.

You will work in parallel with the surgeon, in conjunction with another clinic nurse, and independently, providing comprehensive care to patients both pre and post-operatively. If you have a passion for wound care, a willingness to learn, and a desire to contribute to a supportive team, we encourage you to apply.

About Brisbane Hand and Plastic Surgery

Brisbane Hand and Plastic Surgery, led by Dr Kieran Rowe, is a well-established practice renowned for its expertise in a broad spectrum of plastic and reconstructive surgery. Our practice is primarily located at Nicholson Street Specialist Centre located on the Greenslopes Campus.

We manage a diverse caseload, including major reconstructive cases, a large volume of skin cancer patients, and individuals undergoing post-weight loss skin reduction surgery. We pride ourselves on our close relationships with community nursing services and our commitment to providing exceptional care to all patients, including a significant number of Veteran and elderly private patients.

The Opportunity: Your Role as Practice Nurse

As our Practice Nurse, you will be integral to the smooth running of our clinic and the delivery of outstanding patient care. Your responsibilities will include:

Pre- and Post-operative Patient Management: Provide comprehensive counselling, education, and support to patients before and after a wide range of plastic surgery procedures. This includes extensive wound care and post-operative management, often requiring weekly follow-ups for skin cancer, reconstruction and post-weight loss patients.

Minor Operating Theatre Management: Take charge of the day-to-day operation of our in-house minor theatre. This involves setup, sterilisation, and inventory management of all clinical supplies and consumables. You will assist with minor skin excision, minor aesthetic cases, skin biopsies, skin grafts, and small flaps.

Patient Follow-up and Liaison: Conduct patient follow-up via telephone, email, and in-person, coordinating care with community nursing services and other caregivers, especially for patients residing far from Brisbane.

Clinical and Administrative Support: While your primary focus is clinical, you'll occasionally assist secretarial staff with administrative duties such as answering phones and booking appointments, particularly for ongoing wound care patients.

Learning and Autonomy: Gain exposure to a wide variety of reconstructive cases, from major head and neck oncology to complex hand and limb reconstructions. After an initial observation and guidance period, you will be afforded a significant degree of autonomy in clinical decision-making, particularly in wound care. You will independently manage post-operative patient care at least one day a week, with Dr Rowe readily available for support and guidance.

Maintaining accurate patient records and ensuring compliance with relevant medical and nursing standards.

Coordinating the efficient flow of patients through the practice and providing a high level of patient care.

Collaborating with the multidisciplinary team to deliver holistic, patient-centred care.

Participating in the ongoing development and improvement of nursing practices and protocols.

Team Collaboration: Work closely with Dr Rowe and our experienced clinic nurse, providing parallel patient care on specific days to ensure comprehensive oversight of complex cases and ongoing clinical preferences.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will need:

Current AHPRA Registration: As a Registered Nurse (RN) with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

Clinical Experience: Essential experience in a clinical setting involving direct patient care. While previous exposure to plastic surgery (outpatient or inpatient) is highly preferred, a willingness to learn is paramount.

Wound Management Interest: A strong interest in wound management is crucial, as this will constitute a large component of your caseload. You should be willing to trial new and innovative dressings and wound care methods.

Australian Citizenship and COVID-19 Vaccination: Essential requirements for the position.

Flexibility and Adaptability: Our clinic days operate on a 4-week rotation, and your work hours may vary, but will be predicable.

Team Player: Ability to work collaboratively and support a small, close-knit team.

Exceptional Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a professional and empathetic presentation.

Organisational Skills: Strong time management, prioritisation, and the ability to create efficiencies in a busy environment.

Genie Practice Management Software experience (useful but not essential): Training will be provided as needed.

A desire to care for an older cohort of patients.

Key Benefits

Be part of a modern plastic surgery practice with exposure to a wide range of aspects of the specialty.

A friendly and supportive work environment.

Enjoy a degree of autonomy in clinical decision-making, especially in wound care.

This is a permanent part-time role offering approximately 30.4 hours per fortnight.

Start Date

We are looking for someone to start around June 8th, 2025, but an earlier start is possible to allow for on-the-job training with our current Clinical Nurse, ensuring a smooth and supportive transition into the role.
