About the role
The Senior Officer, Research Contracts is a key member of the Research Services team, responsible for the review, negotiation, and management of a variety of research-related agreements. This role ensures legal and institutional compliance while supporting researchers and staff through the contract lifecycle.
Responsibilities
- View, draft, negotiate, and finalise research contracts and subcontracts using standard internal or external templates.
- Conduct due diligence and risk assessments in collaboration with Legal and Governance as required.
- Ensure protection of intellectual property in consultation with the IP and Commercialisation team.
- Support contract variations and notices throughout the contract lifecycle.
- Provide guidance to researchers on contract terms, milestones, and obligations.
- Assist with research budget preparation and costing in line with policy.
- Support mapping and improvement of contract management processes and templates.
- Monitor and help enhance risk assessment strategies.
- Maintain accurate research contract records in Research Master and Content Manager.
- Build collaborative relationships with internal stakeholders including Legal, Finance, IP and Commercialisation, and Research Centres.
- Act as a trusted point of contact for contract-related matters.
- Develop and deliver educational materials on research contracting processes.
- Must hold or be able to obtain a valid Working with Children Check.
Skills and Experience
- Completion of a law degree and/or paralegal experience.
- Demonstrated experience in drafting and negotiating research contracts in higher education, government, or commercial settings.
- Sound understanding of contract risks and legal implications.
- Strong initiative, judgment, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent client service orientation with clear communication skills.
- Exceptional planning, attention to detail, and ability to manage competing deadlines.
