The Opportunity

Are you passionate about empowering young people and creating inclusive, supportive communities? Wollongong City Council is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Casual Youth Workers to join our Community Development and Engagement team.

As a Youth Worker, you will play a vital role in supporting young people aged 12-24 across the Wollongong Local Government Area. You'll work side-by-side with youth to ensure they are heard, valued, and included. This role involves delivering targeted programs, providing support and advocacy, and fostering youth participation in decision-making.

We are looking for casual staff who are flexible with their working hours who can be called upon at short notice, including shift work (day, evenings and weekends) and may be located at any of the locations within Council's Youth Services, dependant on operational requirements.

Under Part 2, Section 6 of the Child Protection (Working With Children) Act 2012, this position has been designated as requiring a paid Working With Children Check.

Salary from $41.08 per hour plus superannuation and any applicable casual loading (Salary package will be assessed based on skills, experience, and qualifications)

How you'll make a difference

You'll take pride in creating and delivering engaging programs that resonate with young people, including supervising our dynamic Drop-In sessions at the Youth Centre. Be a trusted point of contact, providing information, support, and referrals to help young people navigate challenges and access the services they need.

You will step in with empathy and professionalism, assisting in finding solutions when complex issues or crisis situations arise.

You'll ensure our services are inclusive and accessible through proactive community development initiatives. Behind the scenes, you'll collect and evaluate data to continuously improve our programs, mentor students and project workers to build capacity, and ensure everything we do aligns with child protection and WHS legislation-because safety and wellbeing are at the heart of our work.

About you

You are deeply committed to supporting young people and creating inclusive, empowering environments. With qualifications in youth work, first aid certification and hands-on experience working directly with young people, you bring a strong foundation in building trust and fostering positive relationships.

You communicate effectively, solve problems with empathy and clarity, and thrive in collaborative team settings.

You bring a solid understanding of youth-related legislation and mandatory reporting requirements and hold a current NSW Working with Children Check or are willing to obtain.

Above all, you align closely with Council's values-Respect, Integrity, OneTeam, Sustainability, and Courage-which guide your approach to every interaction and initiative.
