What is the role?

Applications are sought from suitably qualified applicants wishing to be considered for the role of Regional Security Advisor.

The Regional Security Advisor Network (RSAN) is attached to the AFP Security Command. Advisors within the RSAN are responsible for the implementation of security risk management principles; promote proactive and positive organisational security culture, and effectively implement security policy as stipulated by the Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF), within their geographic Command structure.

The Regional Security Advisor (RSA) position relies heavily on relationship building and engagement with internal and external stakeholders. Effective communication skills, self-management and motivation are vital for this role.

The RSAN is managed under the authority of Security Command and provides nationally consistent advice to Commands to meet the fundamental outcomes of the AFP Security Plan. The RSA is imbedded within each Command and is the conduit between their Command, and the four pillars of AFP Security: Security Governance, Information Security, Personnel Security and Physical Security.

The RSA position requires a minimum Negative Vetting 2 (Top Secret) clearance, or the ability to obtain and maintain this level of clearance. As there may be short notice provided for Rapid Response Overseas Travel, the successful applicant may be required to obtain and maintain the necessary rapid response medical clearance. The RSA position works to the Operations Working Pattern which attracts a 22% composite.

You will also be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. It is expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.

What will you do?

  • Identify relevant threats, vulnerabilities and security risks to AFP sites and personnel, working collaboratively to develop appropriate security treatments to mitigate the identified risk;
  • Produce security risk assessments and treatment plans on AFP operations and activities;
  • Deliver Site Security Response Plan, Security Awareness and Induction Training;
  • Promote a robust and positive security culture through on-going consultation, collaboration and communication with personnel;
  • Investigate and report on security incidents and breaches of security governance, devise risk mitigations and develop trend reporting;
  • Provide support to the Threat to AFP Personnel Program (Bulwark);
  • Conduct site security assessments, identifying vulnerabilities and recommending appropriate security treatments;
  • Be the local point of contact for the contracted security guarding service;
  • Prepare, monitor and review site specific Security Response Plans;
  • Provide security advice for AFP hosted events, including development of Event Security Plans;
  • Assist all members within Command to be aware of and fulfil their security responsibilities and obligations; and
  • Provide updates to Security Command about any security-related event or works being undertaken in the regional commands.

  • Demonstrated Australian Government protective security experience and/or qualifications;
  • Experience in production of site security assessments;
  • Experience in production of risk assessment and treatment plans;
  • The ability to prioritise tasks and meet tight timeframes, with minimal supervision, while delivering high level outputs and contributing to the outcome of the Security Command; and
  • Ability to undertake domestic and international travel, sometimes at short notice.

Desirable Requirements

  • ASIO T4 Security Practitioners Course
  • Qualifications in Security Risk Management (Diploma or Cert IV)
  • Qualifications in Government Investigation

Additional Information

  • This position is an AFP Band Level 6.
  • National or International travel may be required for this role, depending on business needs.
  • This advertisement is to create a merit pool only for future ongoing or non-ongoing vacancies arising over the next 12 months located in Canberra, ACT. Successful applicants must be willing to relocate to Canberra at their own expense.
  • This role attracts a composite allowance in recognition of expanded working hours, normal patterns of attendance and shift patterns (such as afternoon shifts, weekends and Designated Public Holidays) that are required under the Operations working pattern. In accordance with the AFP Enterprise Agreement, an employee who is required to work in accordance with the Operations working pattern will receive a Core Composite of 22% in addition to their base salary, which will count as salary for superannuation.
