About the opportunity
The University of Sydney is welcoming applications for a Technical Officer to join the dynamic Technical Support Services (TSS)- Faculty of Medicine and Health team working within the Westmead Health Precinct.
Based out of Westmead Kids Research Centre, the Technical Officer will work under the direction of the Senior Technical Officer to facilitate the implementation of agreed technical support services within the responsibility area to achieve research facilities support outcomes.
The Technical Officer will play a pivotal role in driving innovation and operational excellence by supporting the implementation of enhanced processes, systems, and workflows aimed at elevating customer service delivery, optimising efficiency, and maximising resource utilisation. Additionally, the Technical Officer will collaborate closely with the Senior Technical Officer to uphold the highest standards of Work Health and Safety (WHS), ensuring full compliance with University policies and relevant legislative requirements.
This position requires the successful candidate to work full-time on site to ensure consistent and hands-on support for technical operations.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
- collaborate with researchers, Sydney Children's Hospital Network (SCHN) Operations staff, and other technical staff to ensure efficient running of the responsibility areas
- use a variety of standard or specialist technical methods in problem solving, troubleshooting and optimisation of protocols, and in designing analytical or investigative tasks
- deliver services in accordance with TSS service offerings and service performance targets. Tailor services to user/client requirements where within remit and escalate service gaps/feedback as appropriate
- support the Senior Technical Officer in planning and managing resources (e.g. equipment, consumables, services, etc.) and ensuring that critical research priorities are met
- lead by example by visibly adhering to established WHS/compliance procedures and leading practices, including all customer-facing activities and communications
- seek and act on opportunities to cross-skill, including drawing on the knowledge and expertise of others
- contribute to a positive, professional, customer-focused team culture that is aligned with stakeholder needs
- enact best practice standards for interacting with customers, such as tone of language, methods of communication, etc.

About you

- a degree in Biomedical Science (or equivalent) with relevant work experience providing support to research or educational laboratories
- the fitness ability to do manual lifting as required in the laboratories
- willingness to undergo vaccination or health screening as per NSW Health guidelines for this position
- demonstrated ability to apply and contribute to the development, maintenance, and review of standard technical documentation and operating procedures
- experience providing first level support, maintenance, and training to students/researchers on common and specialised laboratory equipment, which includes engaging external parties to repair equipment
- sound working knowledge of safety regulations and operating procedures within the laboratory environment, including relevant experience the safe handling/storage/disposal of biological waste and hazardous substances (e.g. chemical waste, compressed gases and cryogens)
- customer service experience in any front-line service environment interacting with customers or clients.
