The Role
As an APS 6 Capability Analyst, within the Defence Digital Group (DDG) you will perform a range of duties in support of building military digital capability, aligned with the Defence Integrated Investment Program (IIP) and the One Defence Capability System. You will be responsible for researching, preparing, and delivering accurate and informative briefings to executive officials or groups within the organisation to assist in decision-making.
You will identify and analyse emerging ICT or digital requirements in the IIP and other minor capability projects. You will engage capability sponsors to understand needs, and liaise with internal subject matter experts to understand opportunities, interdependencies, and options to deliver the ADFs capability effects. The main responsibilities for the Capability Analyst are:
- Engage with capability sponsors to identify ICT requirements for IIP projects.
- Review and analyse capability proposals, clarify and enhance articulation of requirements to enable the establishment of DDG projects.
- Prepare timely, well-researched briefs to support senior leadership attendance at investment forums.
- Maintain awareness of current DDG projects and inform external stakeholders of DDG strategies, initiatives, and product roadmaps.
- Identify, evaluate, and communicate opportunities, risks, and digital capacity pressures that are aligned with Digital ICT strategy.
- Contribute to the development of internal processes and workflows to enhance work consistency, efficiency, and visibility.
This role is eligible for an additional remuneration benefit known in Defence as a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP). This enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the base salary otherwise payable under the Defence Enterprise Agreement (DEA), for positions in occupational disciplines/classifications that are critical to Defence capability. About our Team
This APS 6 Capability Analyst position is part of the Military Digital Demand (MDD) Directorate of the Defence Digital Group (DDG). MDD is the group’s engagement lead to identify, prioritise, and inform the delivery of digital capability effects in support of military capability outcomes. MDD consolidates digital requirements and aligns delivery outcomes across group and services to ensure our military personnel are equipped with modern, interoperable, and secure digital systems that contribute to the ADF’s decision superiority.

- The Australian (federal) Government and Defence investment portfolio processes;
- ICT technology layers, the Defence ICT ecosystem, and digital product lifecycle(s);
- The Australian Defence Force strategic posture and policy;
- The Australian One Defence Capability System; and
- Project, program and service management concepts.
The candidate should be able to:
- Analyse and synthesise information from a variety of sources, including policy, instructions, and subject matter experts to provide sound, reasoned recommendations.
- Anticipate and respond to changes in internal and external environments, remaining flexible, open-minded, and resilient through uncertainty and ambiguity.
- Provide accurate, timely and relevant information through written briefs and presentations to executive officials and subject matter experts.
- Identify risks and lead engagement with responsible and accountable officers.
- Collaborate with others to achieve shared objectives, fostering trust and respect for diverse perspectives, and leveraging collective expertise to solve problems.
- Work independently, maintaining quality outputs and meeting deadlines consistently.
