The Role

Defence Security Division plays a critical role in protecting Australia’s defence and national security and capability edge. We are seeking experienced Senior Security Risk Analysts to join the Directorate of Enterprise Security Assessment.

  • In this senior role, you will use your skills and experience to provide expert assessment, advice, and consultation on strategic capabilities and issues.
  • As a key adviser, you will analyse complex information from diverse information sources, identifying risks, issues, trends and patterns and deliver strategic assessments to key stakeholders and senior leadership to inform and enable courses of action, or reduce uncertainty in their decision-making.
  • Coordinate and deliver targeted security assessments including the planning and execution of risk panels and information gathering activities for identified matters of strategic significance to Defence across the geo-strategic footprint.
  • Leveraging a deep understanding of the security risk landscape, provide expert advice on complex risk issues offering strategic recommendations to senior stakeholders.

This role is eligible for an additional remuneration benefit known in Defence as a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP). This enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the base salary otherwise payable under the Defence Enterprise Agreement (DEA), for positions in occupational disciplines/classifications that are critical to Defence capability. About our Team

The Directorate of Enterprise Security Assessments (DESA) supports strategic security assessments within the Defence enterprise. The Directorate leverages intelligence driven methodology to provide tailored security threat and vulnerability advice to risk stewards and decision makers.

In addition to providing advice to select National Defence Strategy and AUKUS Pillar One priorities, the Directorate is a stakeholder in a number of Defence and National Security programs with functions including:

  • Threat advice for Defence submissions to the Treasury lead Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB).
  • Intelligence support functions to assessing Foreign Work Authorisations (FWA) in accordance with Safeguarding Australia’s Military Secrets (SAMS) legislation.
  • Foreign Ownership, Control and Influence (FOCI) assessment input to support Defence Industry Security Program (DISP) membership decisions.
  • Delivering security assessments for identified matters of strategic significance to Defence across the geo-strategic footprint.

There will be cross training and skill development available between the strategic risk and intelligence assessment sections within DESA.

Our Ideal Candidate

We are looking for professionals with strong experience in security risk management, analysis and capability briefing skills with an understanding of Australia’s strategic, Defence and National Security priorities.

Ideal candidates will:

  • Have experience or the ability to acquire rapidly, an expert understanding of Australian Government and Defence security principles, policy and controls and the role these play in mitigating high-level security risks.
  • Demonstrated advanced expertise in security risk management, confidently supporting strategic, risk-based decision-making to enable Defence senior decision makers to be adequately informed
  • Be adept at interpreting policy, developing and delivering solutions to complex security challenges, and advising on critical security issues.
  • Exhibit exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to influence and present complex information to senior stakeholders.
  • Be comfortable with proactively building and maintaining productive relationships across Defence, Government, Law Enforcement and Defence Industry.

You may be required to travel interstate occasionally to support assessments.
