The Part-Time Nurse Educator advocates for the patient and is an expert member of the Perioperative team. They provide orientation to and contribute to the professional development of team members in the perioperative service areas, across all 5 of the Direct Endoscopy Day Hospitals. They are responsible for facilitating the professional development of perioperative nursing staff. This responsibility may include new staff orientation, support of the Nurse Unit Manager, clinical support and supervision of staff development, evaluation of competence, supporting change in clinical practice based upon contemporary evidence and continuing professional development.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Facilitating Professional development of perioperative nursing staff by developing education programs and ensuring access to education platforms and competencies. Also, by liaising with external trainers/educators where the need arises.
2. They must promote a positive attitude of lifelong learning.
3. Orientating new staff.
4. Development of transition to practice programs for nurses new to or learning a new role within the perioperative environment.
5. Supporting, mentoring and assessment of staff by the development of a buddy program for the first three months of new staff employment.
6. Educate staff on clinical activities- such as the appropriate wearing of PPE and implementing infection prevention control measures. Also, the safe use of electrosurgical devices, airway management, endoscopy procedures and processes.
7. Collaborating in rostering and allocation to supervise new or less experienced staff.
8. Assist in the development of perioperative policies or review, based upon evidence-based practice.
9. Development and delivery of education relevant to mandatory education and based upon needs analysis data, relevant standards including that of GENCA and ACORN Standards and the NSQHS and new technology.
10. Tracking and documentation of all education and knowledge and skills assessments provided, including those that are mandatory.
11. Participating in performance management activities as required.
12. Acting as a role model, a leader and an agent of change.

14. Adapting to change and the needs of the perioperative environment
15. Participation in quality improvement activities, including but not limited to audits, risk identification and management.
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
Essential:
1. Annual BLS competency.
2. Experience as a Perioperative Nurse Educator and a scrub scout, or recovery nurse.
3. Endoscopy knowledge and experience.
4. Experience in a quality and risk management role.
5. Previous experience as a clinical nurse specialist
6. Small or large group teaching experience
7. Relevant computer experience
8. Demonstrated commitment to ongoing personal and professional development
9. Supports delivery of excellence in nursing care by working alongside nursing staff to further develop their skills, knowledge, abilities and attributes.
Current valid Driver’s Licence and access to a reliable vehicle.
