As a Senior Environmental Adviser in the Environmental Management team, you will be conducting environmental impact assessments, obtaining statutory approvals, and managing environmental aspects of construction and land rehabilitation for some of the City’s most important infrastructure and catchment-based projects.
About the team
The Environmental Management team provides technical expertise on environmental assessments and approvals for City community infrastructure utilities and catchment-based projects. As Senior Environmental Adviser you will report to the Environmental Lead for Utilities & Catchments. As an integral member of the team, you will work with the project managers and other stakeholders to provide expert guidance on environmental aspects, impacts, mitigation, and design to avoid and minimise impacts to the environment. We are responsible for providing advice and support at various project phases. These include all necessary statutory approvals for these City’s projects, assisting and guiding projects through construction and delivery to ensure the environment is protected throughout the project lifecycle. We also look to achieve the best environmental outcome possible for a project and refer to local policy, including Our Natural City Strategy; to protect and enhance our natural environment.
The Environmental Management team sits within the Environmental Improvement and Compliance business unit, under the Environment, Heritage and Resilience department.
About your new role
The Senior Environmental Adviser (Level 6) is responsible for working independently and with other team members to provide environmental advice, impact assessment, and obtaining statutory approvals for a range of infrastructure utilities and catchment-based projects. This involves working closely with project managers and other stakeholders from the planning, design and through to the delivery phase of the project, to ensure compliance with environmental State legislation and to achieve the best possible environmental outcome. At the planning and design phases we interpret the State legislation to advise on whether the project is ‘assessable’ and therefore approvals are required, prior to works. For example, does the project impact on native vegetation or is it considered a waterway barrier? At the Delivery phase we ensure that the approval conditions are translated to the construction environmental management plan.
The Senior Environmental Adviser is also responsible for reviewing construction environmental management documentation and ensuring that construction is compliant with legislation and the City’s standards. The role includes working closely with project managers to deliver projects in an environmentally sensitive and legally compliant manner, as well as supporting the team; the Environmental Lead (Utilities & Catchments) and the Coordinator Environmental Management in providing technical advice to the Organisation on environmental matters, such as ground and surface water quality, acid sulfate soils, and contaminated land.
