Commercial Manager | Hunter Region | NSW Government

- $1000 - $1200 p/d + super (rates to be confirmed)
- Based in the Hunter Region, 2 days onsite per week
Primary Purpose of the Role:
The Commercial Manager ensures the commercial protection of major infrastructure programs through expert contract management, claims and variation resolution, and proactive dispute mitigation strategies. The role leads the implementation of commercial frameworks that align with best practice while safeguarding value-for-money outcomes and managing high-risk contractual interfaces.
Key Accountabilities:
- Lead the implementation of commercial management frameworks, including claims, variations, dispute resolution, insurance, and fraud prevention.
- Oversee contract negotiation, risk allocation, probity, cost benchmarking, and performance reporting to ensure best-practice outcomes.
- Review and assess contractor claims and variations, ensuring all commercial risks are identified, addressed, and properly letterised for audit and dispute defence.
- Provide strategic advice on contract delivery, governance, value-for-money measurement, and project delivery risk profiles.
- Coordinate dispute prevention and resolution strategies to minimise project impacts and legal exposure.
- Manage specialist advisors and oversee contractor performance systems, reporting frameworks, and contract administration guidelines.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to drive consistency in contract delivery and ensure alignment with current guidelines and policy.
- Maintain visibility over emerging commercial issues and provide leadership in resolving complex contract-related challenges.
Essential Requirements:
- Tertiary qualifications in engineering, commerce, business, or a related field.
- Extensive experience managing large-scale infrastructure projects through all phases of delivery.
- Proven expertise in contract management within transport or infrastructure environments, particularly under Design & Construct (D&C) models.
- Strong background in commercial risk, dispute management, claims and variations, and formal correspondence (letterising).
- Demonstrated ability to manage contractors, resolve issues proactively, and navigate government procurement and reporting frameworks.
- Exceptional stakeholder management, communication, and negotiation skills.
