We are seeking highly motivated Radiation Oncologists to join the Northern Cancer Service (NCS), which operates radiation therapy sites in both Launceston and Burnie.

About the Northern Cancer Service

The Northern Cancer Service provides comprehensive and integrated cancer care, offering state-of-the-art medical oncology, radiation oncology, and haematology services to a population of approximately 250,000 people across Northern Tasmania.

  • Burnie: A vibrant coastal city on Tasmania’s northwest coast, Burnie currently operates as a single-machine unit, linked to the main centre in Launceston. With the recent addition of a second linear accelerator, we are expanding services.
  • Launceston (W.P. Holman Clinic): Our larger facility, with the capacity to operate up to three linear accelerators.

Your Role & Opportunities

  • Launceston provides Brachytherapy services for the entire state of Tasmania (~500,000 people).
  • The facility is expanding, with opportunities for candidates interested in upskilling in this field.
  • Our modern Brachytherapy Suite was upgraded last year with new HDR equipment, providing exciting new opportunities.
  • Radiation Oncology Team:
  • The W.P. Holman Clinic in Launceston has three Radiation Oncologists and one fully accredited advanced trainee position, with plans for future expansion to a second trainee position.
  • A newly qualified Radiation Oncologist (IMG) will be joining the team for at least the next two years.
  • The North West Cancer Centre in Burnie has two Radiation Oncologists, supported by a Career Medical Officer.
  • Advanced Techniques & Specialised Services:
  • Stereotactic Therapy: Currently provided in Launceston, but candidates based in Burnie should have experience in, or be willing to develop expertise in, this area.
  • Brachytherapy Service:
  • Research & Multidisciplinary Collaboration:
  • Our clinical trials and research unit, based in Launceston, runs a range of Phase 2 & 3 trials.
  • A rigorous Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) program fosters collaborative patient care.

Details of Appointment:

  • Position: Permanent, full-time, working 76 hours per fortnight, with daytime work only (on-call duties for Launceston only). Fixed term hours may be negotiated with the successful applicant.
  • Start Date: As soon as possible.
  • Location: To be discussed with the successful applicants (WP Holman Clinic Launceston or the North West Cancer Centre Burnie)

Salary:

The remuneration package for the positions is as per the current Specialist Medical Practitioner Award for Tasmania. Currently the Burnie positions provide for an extra 20% of the base salary as a retention allowance as recognition of service provision rurally.

Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1- Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 3 $216,300 - $310,389 per annum

Please note that access to the Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range $300,216 - $310,389 is subject to the successful applicant satisfying the criteria for Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1, 2 or 3 as outlined in the Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022

In addition, the following allowances calculated on the salaried incremental point may be available:

  • Provision of a fully maintained private plated motor vehicle or motor vehicle allowance of $28,389 per annum
  • Continuing Professional Development Allowance of $16,480 per annum
  • Private Patient Allowance - 35% of base salary
  • North West Tasmania Recruitment & Retention allowance – 20% of base salary
  • Relocation package and accommodation allowance available

Eligibility:

Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria:

  1. Specialist or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia in the radiation oncology speciality

Applicants should note the following criteria are desirable:

1. Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists relevant to the applicant’s radiation oncology speciality

2. Current Driver’s Licence
