About the role

Reporting to the Coordinator of Planning Approvals, this is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and detail-oriented Urban Planner to contribute to the strategic development of our growing City. You will play a key role in ensuring the City’s planning objectives align with legislative frameworks and community expectations. In this role, you will:

  • Assess and process development and subdivision applications in accordance with the WA Statutory Planning Framework and local policies.
  • Investigate compliance matters and resolve planning issues through mediation and stakeholder negotiation.
  • Provide professional planning advice to internal teams, external agencies, developers, consultants, and the community.
  • Represent the City in meetings and at the State Administrative Tribunal as required.
  • Contribute to policy development and strategic planning by supporting internal reviews and offering insights into broader City strategies.
  • Conduct site inspections and participate in community consultation activities, including some outside standard business hours.

About the successful candidate

To be successful in this role, you will bring a strong understanding of statutory planning in Western Australia, with the ability to apply legislation and policy effectively in a local government setting. You will be proactive, solutions-focused, and confident in working with a diverse range of stakeholders to deliver practical, community-oriented planning outcomes. Other essential requirements are:

  • A tertiary qualification (or significant progress towards) in Urban and Regional Planning or a relevant field.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in a similar urban planning role (Level 5) and eligibility for full membership with the Planning Institute of Australia (Level 5).
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills, with strong report writing and stakeholder engagement capabilities.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise competing tasks.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and GIS systems; experience with InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop is highly regarded.
  • A current ‘C’ class Driver’s Licence and a current National Police Certificate.

What we offer

This permanent, full-time role offers a cash salary of $81,874 - $111,058 per annum, dependent on skills and experience, plus superannuation.

A population of over 21,000 live in the suburbs Nedlands, Dalkeith, Mt Claremont, Swanbourne, Karrakatta, and parts of Floreat and Shenton Park. On 1 July, 1959 the City of Nedlands was proclaimed at the command of Governor Sir Charles Gairdner, in the packed Dalkeith Civic Hall. Mr Allan Jenkins read out the proclamation and the Minister for Local Government, Mr Leslie Logan, M.L.C. conducted the official swearing in ceremony of the new Mayor, John Charles Smith, the twelve new Councillors and the auditors. He then appointed Mr Allan Jenkins as the City's first Town Clerk. Among those present was MLA for Nedlands, Deputy Premier Charles Court.

Significant events and dates that contributed to the development of the City of Nedlands:

1893: The first move to establish Local Government in our area with the creation of the Claremont Road Board on 31 March, 1893, governing a total area of ten square miles; forty years after the death of Adam Armstrong, Nedlands' first resident.

1898: Approximately two square miles excised to form the Municipality of Claremont.

1932: Name changed from Claremont Road Board to Nedlands Road Board.

1956: Name changed from Nedlands Road Board to the Municipality of Nedlands.

1959: One hundred and thirty years after the first British settlement around the Swan River, Nedlands achieved City status. Name changed from Nedlands Road Board to the City of Nedlands while under the guidance of Mayor John Charles Smith Esq., JP Mayor.
