About the opportunity
The Sydney Informatics Hub is looking for a Data Science Software Engineer to develop and enhance FAIR, user-friendly text processing and analysis tools for researchers across diverse disciplines.
You will develop compelling, accessible, and reusable demonstration notebooks and data-driven research case studies as part of the Australian Research Data Commons, Language Data Commons of Australia (LDaCA) project, facilitating self-service researcher training and research acceleration.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
- work within a highly collaborative team, reporting to the Data Science Group Lead
- provide software engineering support on projects undertaken by Sydney Informatics Hub, as defined by the LDaCA project work packages.
- support activities in the form of software development and training workshops for text analytics and data science
- support the identification and dissemination of research opportunities in the university and the wider business communities
- work collaboratively with other parts of Sydney Informatics Hub to build and develop an engineering and entrepreneurial culture in the support of data science across the university.
About you
- tertiary qualifications and/or relevant experience in a related field
- experience in planning and development of complex data processing software projects and pipelines, processing data from a variety of sources and destinations, ranging from file systems to enterprise data systems. AND/OR; experience in full stack application development involving HTML, CSS, JavaScript, back end programming and databases from initial requirements, design to deployment
- front end development skills and text analytics skills desirable
- experience in eliciting user requirements through consultation and problem solving to design solutions that meet time constraints
- experience and/or willingness to apply best practice in software development
- excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with sound negotiating and conflict resolution skills and a demonstrated level of tact and discretion in dealing with day to day operational matters
- demonstrated ability to organise and prioritise work, sometimes under pressure, with competing priorities and sometimes limited supervision
- a good understanding of software engineering tools, modern data analytics methods, and familiarity with statistical or machine learning techniques
- a knowledge of modern programming languages including one of Python or JavaScript.
