College Vision:

St John’s Catholic College is a safe, connected, learning community for local, boarding and international students. We strive for excellence and ensure the holistic development of each student through a balanced approach to faith, academic, sporting and cultural activities.

Primary Objective:

To provide and manage a high-quality health service, first aid and general nursing services in line with Registration Standards for all students of St John’s Catholic College. Please note the Health Centre is for all students: day, boarding and international.

Hours and Leave:

• Refer to Part 10 of the Catholic Schools (Northern Territory) Collective Enterprise Agreement 2022 – 2024 (or as replaced)

• Ordinary hours 38 hours per week Monday – Friday

• Additional 5.5 hours per week for stand down pay.

• 30-minute lunch break (unpaid)

• Usual day: 7:00am – 4:12pm (note this includes the additional hours for stand down)

• TOIL available for ad hoc consultations

• Recreation leaves to be taken during December / January school holidays.

Fixed Term Contract: 14 July 2025 - 31 July 2026

Key Responsibilities:

Provide a safe, secure and caring environment for all students, staff and families and show a strong personal commitment to upholding the Catholic Ethos and Mission of the College.

Health Support:

- Assess students’ medical requirements and provide health care services as required.

- Distribute medication to students between working hours.

- Coordinate out of hours medication administration system for Boarding Staff including accurate management and recording of distributed medications.

- Refer residential students to medical practitioners and specialists as required.

- Provide ongoing treatment for injured or unwell residential students in consultation with medical practitioners.

- Administer First Aid to all staff and students in emergencies during school hours.

- Coordinate ‘hand over’ of unwell students to Boarding Team Leaders at the end of each shift and communicate appropriate treatment / health management plans.

- Supervise, observe and provide appropriate health care for residential students who are ‘admitted’ to the Health Centre.

- Collaborate and advise any health professionals undertaking programs in the Health Centre, e.g.: vaccinations, hearing, health screening, emergency services etc

- Provide regular advice to the Principal, Director and Assistant Directors of Boarding, on the health status of students.

- Assess the physical, mental, emotional, and social health needs of students and put mechanisms in place to support these needs.

- Understand and help implement the requirements of Child Safe Practices within the forum of the Health Centre and across the College as required – including mandatory reporting.

Administration:

- Ensure residential and day school First Aid Kits are appropriately equipped; including PE, kitchen, laundry, canteen, buses and student administration offices.

- Coordinate with the School Officer: Health Centre and Administration for the ordering of necessary supplies, medication and equipment for the Health Centre.

- Keep up to date stock of First Aid kits, CPR and AED equipment.

- Coordinate with the School Officer: Health Centre and Administration for the administration functions of the Health Centre.

- Facilitate health and hygiene education to all students, including coordinating with outside agencies and service providers.

- Maintain medical records and immunisations on all students.

- Manage the day-to-day operations of the School Officer: Health Centre and Administration to ensure smooth operations of the Health Centre, coordinated organisation of medical appointments and transport options, record keeping and supervision of inured or unwell students in the Health Centre.

Liaise with:

- Advise and assist Boarding Staff on all residential students’ health matters, while keeping Director of Boarding informed.

- Provide regular advice to the Director and Assistant Director of Boarding on dietary requirements of Boarding students.

- Liaise with other Community Health Centres and the Enrolment Officer to support the application and enrolment process.

- Work with residential and other school staff to ensure pastoral care and wellbeing of students is supported.

- Communicate to families and health care providers to ensure that all stakeholders, guardians and caregivers are kept informed regarding health outcomes of the individual students they support.

- Work closely with the School Counsellor in the Health Centre to ensure ongoing mental health support and follow up for students as required.

- Work closely with outside agencies and other service providers across the Darwin and Palmerston region to ensure best outcomes related to physical and mental health needs of students are met.

Operational:

- Manage and maintain the College Health Centre as a safe and professional health care work environment

- Manage vaccination, screening, hearing and other health related programs with Government agencies.

- Attend and provide First Aid care at College Carnivals.

- Ensure security of all medications and Health Centre building each day.

- Supervise and/or accompany students to medical appointments (where necessary).

Selection Criteria:

Essential

- Willingness to support and contribute to the Catholic Ethos of the College.

- Maintain a current Northern Territory Working with Children Check (Ochre Card).

- Registration as registered nurse.

- Registration with the Northern Territory Board of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

- Vaccination Qualification

- Demonstrated experience working in a culturally diverse work environment.

- Capable in dealing with complex situations in an efficient and effective manner.

- Ability to build positive professional relationships with a range of stakeholders.

- High level interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate appropriately, effectively and professionally with a range of stakeholders from a diverse range of backgrounds.

- Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel and as the capacity to learn the student management system.

- Understanding and commitment to child safe practices.

- Knowledge of Infection Control and Workplace Health and Safety.

- High level of written and oral communication skills.

- Ability to build trust and maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.

- NT Driver’s licence.

- Ability to work in accordance with college, system and jurisdiction policy, processes and legislation.

Highly Desirable

- Experience in Primary health care and child and adolescence.

- Experience of working in remote Aboriginal communities.
