What you'll be doing
The Genetic Counsellor position at Westmead Hospital offers a dynamic role in the Familial Cancer Service, providing outpatient genetic counselling through both in-person and telehealth consultations. This position is ideal for individuals passionate about cancer risk assessment, genetic testing, and patient care.

  • Provide genetic counselling for individuals and families regarding cancer risk, history, and management.
  • Assess genetic risk and deliver client-centered counselling, including genetic testing and family history documentation.
  • Triaging referrals, organizing clinics, and promoting FCS services to health professionals and the community.
  • Support patient follow-ups, offer emotional support, and refer to other services as needed.
  • Collaborate in a multidisciplinary team to improve service delivery and educate genetic counselling students.

Essential Criteria:

  • Qualification: Must have an undergraduate degree in a non-nursing, non-medical discipline and in addition hold a post graduate qualification in genetic counselling or have attained Part I certification in genetics counselling from the Human Genetics Society of Australasia.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Post graduate qualification in genetic counselling and/or have attained Part 1 certification/‘Board Eligible’ status to undertake certification in genetic counselling from the Human Genetics Society of Australasia, and a commitment to work towards full certification in Genetic Counselling.
  2. Knowledge and understanding of the application of evidence based practice to Genetic Counselling.
  3. Demonstrated computer literacy with experience with MS office, databases, presentations and pedigree drawing software.
  4. Well-developed interpersonal, analytical and communication skills (both oral and written).
  5. Demonstrated ability to work both autonomously and within a multidisciplinary setting and to organise individual workloads to meet deadlines, commitments and standards of performance.
  6. A sound understanding of issues related to privacy, confidentiality and ethics.
  7. Well-developed time management skills, and demonstrated commitment, ability to meet deadlines and high standards of performance.
  8. Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development.
