About the opportunity

Interested in starting a career in Pathology? NSW Health Pathology is seeking highly organised and detail-oriented Technical Assistants to join our Central Specimen Reception team in Westmead Hospital – ICPMR. The successful candidates will play a crucial role in the initial processing and data entry of Pathology specimens. This role is vital for maintaining the efficiency and integrity of our diagnostic services.

The Central Specimen Reception (CSR) service unit is part of the Institute of Clinical Pathology and Medical research (ICPMR) in the Western Sydney Local Health District. The unit provides 24 hour, 7 days a week service at Westmead Hospital to provide a quality, timely and efficient service to all clients of ICPMR and the surrounding West network.

What you'll be doing

Perform a range of laboratory support, specimen handling/processing and data entry services as part of the Central Specimen Reception Department. Provide assistance to laboratory staff, under supervision, to deliver a patient focused service.

  1. A working knowledge of, or demonstrated ability to learn, all aspects of the laboratory environment relevant to the Department
  2. Demonstrated ability to maintain high quality work output while managing competing priorities
  3. Demonstrated customer service experience and skills, preferably in a laboratory environment, including the ability to communicate effectively with customers, patients and clinical staff
  4. Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills combined with the ability to investigate and resolve general issues within the laboratory environment
  5. Excellent data entry skills including high attention to detail and data accuracy
  6. Awareness of legislation, policies and requirements relevant to a laboratory setting
  7. Ability to participate in a 24/7 rotating shift roster including weekends, public holidays and night shift
