Enthusiastic PSYCHOLOGIST wanting to make a difference!

Are you a self-motivated psychologist, passionate about making a meaningful impact in the lives of children and adolescents? If so, our practice, Northern Centre for Child + Adolescent Development (NCCD) in Thornbury offers an exceptional opportunity to further your career in a supportive and dynamic environment.

Our clinicians love that they can work as independently as they like, within NCCD’s structure, while regular support is always available and built into their calendars. We encourage our clinicians to evolve and offer regular planning sessions and support to achieve their goals. The workload is consistent and as predictable or varied as you want it to be.

Why Join NCCD?

Meaningful Outcomes: Engage with clients who are actively involved in the therapeutic process, allowing you to form positive connections that lead to significant improvements in their lives.

Variety in Your Role: Enjoy a caseload that matches your interests as much as possible, involving both counselling and assessment across diverse presenting concerns such as ADHD, autism, and learning difficulties.

Connected Team: Experience a collegial atmosphere with long-standing team members who foster a supportive and positive environment.

Great Physical Environment: Work in a spacious, light-filled clinic with consistent access to your own consulting room, enhancing your sense of belonging and professional efficiency.

Flexibility and Support: Benefit from flexible work arrangements that respect your personal needs and professional ambitions, supported by consistent, high-quality supervision and robust professional development opportunities. Everyone works differently and we encourage our clinicians to set their calendars up to meet their minimum billable activity each week in the way that suits them best.

Career Progression: With NCCD, career advancement is clear and structured, whether you aim for clinical growth or leadership roles.

The role...

If the idea of working with a variety of child and adolescent presentations is attractive; you are excellent with time management and you’re continually striving to learn, evolve and improve your clinical knowledge - then we encourage you to apply for a position with us at NCCD.

This role offers a mix of counselling and assessment (ADHD, autism, educational, learning etc.) to provide variety in your caseload. Working with NDIS funded clients as well as those using Medicare or privately funding their therapy also offers some variation in the types of presentations and durations of treatment.

Our burnout prevention model ensures your caseload is as preferred as possible (obviously there are ebbs and flows in referral types!), and supports you to reach your minimum weekly billable hours of 25 (FTE) in a responsible and healthy way through calendar flexibility and caseload management. That allows for over 12 hours a week (FTE) of admin time to ensure case notes are up to date, discuss cases with peers, read up on new techniques - and drink many cups of coffee!

This role requires a clinician who, regardless of clinical experience, understands that private practice is a space to enjoy clinical freedom, while respecting the financial responsibilities of a business.

Unlike many other private practices, NCCD offers a clear structured career progression pathway so that you know what to expect as you grow within our practice. Whether it be clinical growth or leadership development that you seek, we want you to actively progress your career with us.

In addition to the above we offer:

Strong consistent admin support

Monthly external individual supervision

Quarterly in-house professional development

Bi-monthly peer group supervision

Team retreat days at least once a year (see our video below of a recent team day!)

Melbourne’s friendliest team!

Our Mission: We are committed to guide every child, adolescent and their families to their fullest potential by empowering them through clinical excellence to navigate their world more easily

What are we all about

At NCCD we are on a two-pronged mission. We want to empower our clients to navigate life’s challenges by providing clinical excellence in everything that we do, and we are on a mission to support clinicians by maintaining a workplace that is positive, collaborative, respectful and allows them to grow clinically while taking ownership of their role and how it contributes to the business. We want to change the lives of every client we work with and we know this is possible when the right people are on the journey together!

As NCCD clinicians, we are grateful for the opportunity to connect authentically with our clients (and each other) to provide a quality service that ultimately offers our clients clarity for moving forward. We have integrity and take accountability for what we do as clinicians, team members and humans!

NCCD is a private practice - we do not rely on government funding or philanthropic donations so we have a very clear expectation that clinicians will have a minimum of 25 billable hours (FTE) each week (report writing is considered billable).

Where are we going?

While we love providing services for families, in 2025 NCCD is branching out to also offer psychological assessment and support for adults. If this is something you’re interested in, we invite you to express your interest.

Does this all sound too good to be true? Below is some feedback from some of our current and past team members:

Kim McGregor, Psychologist at Northern Centre for Child Development (current employee since 2020):

"Working at NCCD has been an exceptional experience, combining professional growth with personal satisfaction. The varied role in counselling and assessments, especially with young children and those with neurodiversity, is both challenging and deeply rewarding. The supportive team dynamics foster an environment free from competition, enhancing our learning and enjoyment at work.

The flexibility in work arrangements and consistent, experienced supervision have significantly aided my professional development. NCCD's top-notch facilities provide comfortable spaces for therapy, assessments, and casual interactions, making it a truly welcoming and supportive workplace."

Dr Georgina Cox, Senior Clinical Psychologist, RCH (former employee and current external supervisor):

"I completed a student placement during my training at NCCD, and then came back to work there as an employee once fully qualified, as I had enjoyed the experience so much. Most importantly to me, the values of NCCD aligned with my own, having a focus not just on the wellbeing of children and families to allow them to thrive, but also on the employees being supported so that we could all grow in our own directions, while coming together as a team and learning from each other. The emphasis was always on providing best practice care to children and young people, and most importantly, having fun with them, to give them a positive experience of seeing a psychologist, as well as having fun as a team".

Dr Saga Arthursson - Psychologist (former employee):

NCCD is a warm and welcoming clinic that really cares about creating an inclusive and supportive work environment for all of their staff. I love the atmosphere, the casual chit chats with colleagues in the coffee room and the predictable client schedule. NCCD is a safe space to grow and develop professionally with support from a highly skilled and committed team.

Essential Selection Criteria:

Full registration with AHPRA as a psychologist with eligibility to provide Medicare services.

Experience working with children and adolescents of all ages and their parents/educators and applying evidence-based supports for anxiety, depression, behavioural challenges, social challenges, neurodiversity etc.

Demonstrated competency administering assessments (ADHD, Autism, Educational, Learning assessments) and making clinical diagnostic formulations.

Ability to work autonomously with demonstrated exceptional organisation and time management skills

Flexibility in adapting to the evolving demands of private practice
