Job Description – General Practitioner

Job Purpose:

To provide competent, patient centric, culturally appropriate care that address individual health needs and promotes wellness to a defined population. The GP works closely with the nursing team to provide clinical guidance, assistance and support.

Duties and Responsibilities:

· Provide high quality, primary health care services to the community across all age groups and health care needs in keeping with best practice standards.

· Respond to medical or health problems presented by patients including history taking, diagnosis, investigation, treatment and initiating referrals.

· Include the patients in decision making about their health care including supporting their health literacy and including them in their health care planning.

· Use appropriate equipment like stethoscopes, blood pressure monitors in therapy and diagnosis and prescribe medications for patients as appropriate to need.

· Provide health promotion and preventive health care information structured to the individual need of all patients including referring to other providers as appropriate.

· Assess if patients need investigations, special care, and treatment. Carry out procedures within the confines of knowledge and general practice.

· Take a complete history and make detailed notes as legal documentation of treatment. Provide management of long-term conditions in line with national guidelines and pathways.

· Work in a manner that is compliant with health and safety practices, with regards to the handling and disposal of body fluids and sharps.

· Participate in ongoing training offered by the practice, health services and other related institutions. Assist in creating, presenting and monitoring health events as appropriate.

· Work with other doctors and practice staff and allied health personnel as a team member. Liaise with other medical and non-medical professionals to guarantee high quality treatment.

Skills and Specifications:

· Ability to respond to demanding and complicated patient situations and priorities patients according to their clinical needs.

· Effective communication with other doctors as well as patients, maintain concise, timely and accurate confidential records of patients.

· Good time management skills to balance clinical and administrative duties should be flexible to work long hours and under pressure.

· Strong decision-making and practical skills. Should be able to challenge decisions if required.

· Comply and participate in achieving and maintaining clinical and organizational accreditation processes.
