About the role
Yarra Ranges Council is seeking an Environmental Health Officer to join our Public and Environmental Health team. This role is crucial in delivering a range of public and environmental health services aimed at protecting and promoting health, preventing infectious diseases, safeguarding the environment, and enhancing the quality of life within the Yarra Ranges municipality.
This is a full-time temporary position (parental leave backfill) commencing as soon as possible, until April 2026.
This is a Band 6 role with a salary range rate between $95,565 and $104,167 per annum pro rata, plus superannuation.
Support work-life balance with your choice of fortnightly or monthly rostered day off and hybrid working arrangements.
Commuter use vehicle available.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct food sampling as per the team's food sampling plan, submit data for analysis, and communicate results and actions to proprietors.
Investigate foodborne illness incidents, adulterated and unwholesome food reports, collect evidence and specimens, and communicate findings and actions to proprietors.
Investigate and resolve complaints about defective or malfunctioning septic tank systems, issue notices, and take legal action when necessary.
Provide expert advice, conduct on-site assessments, determine the suitability of septic tank and wastewater treatment system proposals, and issue permits in line with the Environment Protection Act, Codes of Practice, and Australian Standards.
Investigate, assess, and resolve reported public health nuisances within the municipality.
Experience and skills we’re looking for
To be successful in this role, you will have:
Relevant qualifications in environmental health, environmental science, public health, or a related field.
Familiarity with relevant environmental health laws and regulations.
Ability to investigate and analyse environmental health issues, gather evidence, and identify solutions.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with a diverse range of people.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
