Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Support the Project Lead in the delivery of a 12-month Work Health and Safety (WHS) Gender Equity project focused on the mining industry in the Northern Territory.
Conduct research and data analysis to inform WHS Gender Equity initiatives and policy recommendations within the mining sector.
Assist in developing, implementing, and coordinating WHS initiatives to improve safety standards and union engagement.
Provide research-based insights and reports to support decision-making by the Project Lead, Unions NT Secretary, General Manager, and Unions NT Executive.
Represent Unions NT in WHS-related forums, meetings, and stakeholder engagements as directed by the Project Lead.
Assist in identifying workplace WHS leaders and activists to strengthen the union movement’s advocacy for safe and fair workplaces.
Support the planning, coordination, and delivery of Health and Safety Representative (HSR) WHS Project across the Northern Territory.
Collaborate with Unions NT staff to ensure alignment with broader organisational goals and initiatives.
Prepare and present quarterly reports on research findings, project progress, and key outcomes in lien with acquittal requirements.
Maintain accurate records and documentation to support project evaluation and reporting.
Selection Criteria:
Essential:
Strong research and analytical skills with experience in WHS laws, regulations, and best practices, particularly in the mining industry.
High-level written communication skills, including preparing research reports, policies, and complex correspondence with confidence and clarity.
Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills to engage, advise, and collaborate with a wide range of stakeholders on WHS matters.
Proven ability to support training and education programs to improve WHS awareness and compliance within unionised workplaces.
Demonstrated commitment to unionism and the broader labour movement, with experience in the Northern Territory context and/or other Australian jurisdictions.
Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively within a team environment.
High-level personal performance standards, with the ability to manage competing priorities, remain positive under pressure, and meet deadlines.
Punctual and reliable with a strong work ethic.
Current Northern Territory Driver’s License (mandatory).
Access to a motor vehicle (to obtain a motor vehicle allowance as part of the salary package).
Desirable:
Previous experience working for a trade union or WHS advocacy within the union movement.
Tertiary qualification in Work Health and Safety, Industrial Relations, or a related field.
Strong knowledge of workplace safety trends and emerging risks in the Northern Territory workforce, particularly in mining.
Experience in policy development and implementation of WHS frameworks.
