About the role
Reporting to the Head of Member and External Communication, our Public Affairs Manager will lead public affairs initiatives, manage media and social media teams, and act as a strategic advisor to senior leadership. You’ll collaborate with the Communications Manager, Government Relations Manager and Advocacy, Policy, and Research team to support the RACGP’s strategic goals and advocacy objectives.

As our Public Affairs Manager, you’ll also:

  • Develop and implement public affairs strategies: Align with the RACGP’s strategic priorities, advocacy plan, and reputational objectives; anticipate socio-political developments; provide insights to leadership; and translate policy recommendations into impactful communications.
  • Lead media and crisis communication efforts: Engage proactively with media outlets; manage responses to inquiries; lead crisis communication and issues management; and provide media training for spokespeople.
  • Oversee digital and social media content: Ensure alignment with advocacy and public affairs activities; deliver engaging digital content; and monitor public discourse for emerging issues, opportunities, or reputational risks.
  • Foster relationships and collaboration: Collaborate with the Communications Manager and Government Relations Manager; ensure consistent messaging across stakeholder touchpoints; and position the RACGP as a thought leader in news media and public forums.

Skills & Experience

  • Qualifications and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or related field; minimum five years’ experience in public affairs/communications, preferably in healthcare or member-based organisations.
  • Skills and Abilities: Proven ability to design campaigns balancing strategic objectives, member interests, and advocacy priorities; strong understanding of Australia’s healthcare system; advanced issues management skills; exceptional written/verbal communication skills; and leadership of cross-functional teams.
  • Highly Desirable Attributes: Postgraduate qualifications in Health Administration, Public Policy, or related discipline; experience in a medical college, peak body, or advocacy organisation; established networks within government, media, or healthcare sectors.
  • Additional Competencies: High-level risk assessment capability; emotional intelligence to influence senior stakeholders; and cultural sensitivity to embed the RACGP’s mission into a cohesive corporate narrative.
