About the Office of Teaching & Research Technical Services
The Office of Teaching and Research Technical Services (TRTS) comprises over 100 staff across five clusters. The Built Environment and Engineering two teams provide specialized support to the School of Engineering, Design and Built Environment, and The College. TRTS is committed to continuous improvement, enhancing team processes and the student experience.
TRTS staff work in partnership with Academic and Professional colleagues to adapt, innovate, and shape the future of learning for a transformative student experience.
About the Opportunity
Join our dynamic and multi-disciplinary Engineering Team as a Technical Support Officer, Civil & Structural Engineering, where you will play a crucial role in supporting both teaching and research activities.
As a Technical Support Officer, Civil & Structural Engineering you will support the learning and development of future engineers and researchers. From preparing practical teaching spaces to maintaining complex equipment, your expertise will ensure the smooth operation of our academic environment. Your primary focus will be providing high quality technical support to facilities where Civil &Structural Engineering are taught, and research are conducted.
This is a full-time, ongoing position based at Western’s Kingswood Campus, although travel to other campuses of the University may be required. Hours of work for TRTS staff may vary based on operational needs. Please review the position description for further informationthrogh the apply link.
Key Responsibilities
As a Technical Support Officer, Civil & Structural Engineering, your role will include the following key responsibilities:
- Organise, prepare, and set up practical classes and support research facilities.
- Purchase resources and minor equipment.
- Ensure a safe working environment in labs and other practical teaching spaces.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot complex equipment specific to Civil & Structural Engineering laboratories.
Skills and Experience
- Client-focused with strong problem-solving skills and innovative thinking.
- Skilled in using and maintaining instruments such servo-controlled hydraulic actuators, universal testing machines, strain gauge, and total station.
- Extensive experience in undergraduate technical support, including lab preparation.
- Knowledge of lab safety, including SOPs, risk assessments, chemical safety, and waste disposal.
- Experience in maintaining research and teaching laboratory workplaces.

Remuneration Package: HEW Level 5 $99,521 to $112,546 p.a. (comprising Salary of $84,096 to $95,103 p.a., plus Superannuation and Leave Loading)
