The Service NSW Global Experience Language (GEL) Team is a team of design system specialists responsible for the developing, improving and supporting of the Service NSW GEL design system at scale.

About the role
You will be responsible for contributing to the development of the design system digital product within an agile product team. You will contribute to an effective software engineering team culture to support the development of reliable and scalable digital systems, to enable teams to create high-quality and consistent customer experiences efficiently.

Key responsibilities include

• Development, technical design, deployment and operation of features and improvements for our products and services.
  

• Contribute to key initiatives to improve software engineering practices, capability and skills, informed by data, experiments and frequent feedback.
  

• Collaborate with engineers, product managers, designers and other cross-functional teams to maintain a high level of quality in a fast-paced and iterative environment.
  

• Design and architect solutions to complex technical problems.
  

Your skills and experience

• Rich software engineering background, including experience in full stack software development with exposure to a broad range of technologies. Experience in, or desire to learn, Extreme Programming (XP), including Test Driven Development and Pair Programming, and willingness to spread the values, principles and practices underpinning this approach.
  

• Collaboration: Strong product mindset, having worked closely with cross-disciplinary product teams.
  

• Excellent understanding of systems thinking and technical design - we'd love to see some experience applying technical design skills in large or complex ecosystems
  

• Firmly grounded computer science and engineering fundamentals including concurrency, multithreading, data structures, solution design, architecture, and design patterns.
  

• Outstanding communication and problem-solving skills: Your exceptional verbal and written skills, together with practical problem solving will see you excel in this role.
  

• Experience in mentoring junior software engineers and driving excellence.
  

• Highly proficient in the creation and development of design systems, with a passion for working closely with both designers and engineers to create reusable, easy-to-consume components and packages.
  

Your technical skills

• Advanced frontend development skills, with excellent knowledge of accessibility techniques and the creation of clean, standards-compliant HTML, CSS, and JavaScript code.
  

• Advanced React.js expertise, with a focus on building accessible, reusable, and scalable components for design systems.
  

• Strong experience with TypeScript.
  

• Responsive design and cross-browser compatibility expertise, ensuring consistent user experiences across devices and platforms.
  
• Experienced in leveraging monorepo tools such as TurboRepo, Lerna, and Nx or equivalents, to support scalable, efficient design systems.
  

• Proficient in build tooling, including Webpack, Vite, and Rollup, or equivalents.
  

• Proficient in design tools such as Figma, translating components accurately into code and collaborating effectively with design teams.
  

We take a cloud-native approach building most of our services in the cloud and hosted in container orchestration platforms. The majority of our digital services are bespoke applications, leveraging shared services to ensure cost effectiveness and scalability.

How we work

At Service NSW we use XP practices (including TDD, pair programming and CI/CD) to design and build fast, stable software and release it to our customers quickly. We are committed to iterative delivery using the build, measure, learn paradigm and we pride ourselves on being responsive to customers' needs.

Our teams collaborate to design and implement the right solutions, applying lean problem-solving to deliver value within a complex ecosystem.

Support office roles will be headquartered across McKell, Parramatta and Gosford. We will consider role headquarters outside of the above locations where the role can reasonably be performed from that location taking into consideration the operational, financial and customer requirements of the role, and an ability to attend a NSW Government workplace as required. At the point an employee is notified of our intention to assign them to a role, the relevant leader will discuss headquarter options.

Salary Service NSW Grade 9/10, with the base salary for this role starting at $126,898 base plus superannuation
