About Research Policy and Ethics
The Ethics team sits within the Research and Education Group. In the ethics space, the team is responsible for leading and influencing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research, ethics, and protocols. This includes the AIATSIS Code of Ethics for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research and the AIATSIS Research Ethics Committee, which is responsible for reviewing ethics applications and projects involving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research.

About the Role
The Assistant Director Research Ethics will be responsible for delivering, growing and promoting the AIATSIS Ethics program. Key responsibilities include:

  • management of the AIATSIS Research Ethics Committee (REC) in accordance with the REC Charter and Standard Operating Procedures, including the need to be responsive to member queries and the timely turnaround of meeting feedback to applicants.
  • developing productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including the development of collaboration agreements wherever possible.
  • development and delivery of ethics education through workshops, presentations and the production of ethics resources as required.
  • reporting to AIATSIS governance committees, partner organisations, AIATSIS senior leadership and government departments.
  • management of staff, setting priorities, establishing work plans, allocating resources, and evaluating project outcomes.
  • preparation of complex briefs, annual reports to the National Health and Medical Research Council, and parliamentary reporting.
  • other duties as directed.

Our Ideal Candidate
To be successful in this role, you will possess a thorough understanding of the National Health and Medical Research Council’s National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research and the AIATSIS Code of Ethics for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research. You will come with the following skills, experience and attributes:

  • ability to provide leadership, build partnerships and develop productive relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities and organisations, academics, government and community stakeholders in the research and ethics sector.
  • proven ability to strategically manage several projects, set priorities, establish work plans, allocate resources and evaluate project outcomes.
  • demonstrated experience in contributing to team planning, decisions and development
  • strong leadership and management skills, including the ability to supervise, inspire and motivate staff, as well as building team capacity through coaching, performance feedback and management.
  • demonstrated ability to communicate with influence, in writing and verbally, in order to advise, liaise and effectively and respectfully negotiate with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
