The Institute for Future Farming Systems at CQUniversity leads world-class agricultural research across six specialised research clusters: Precision Livestock Management, Precision Horticulture, Sensor and Non-invasive Assessment in Agriculture, High Value Tropical Cropping, Ag Education and Extension, and Molecular Microbiome. Partnering closely with industry, the Institute delivers real-world solutions that enhance productivity, profitability, and sustainability in northern Australia’s livestock and horticulture sectors.

As Director, you will shape a strategic research agenda that strengthens industry partnerships, enhances research capabilities, and expands CQU’s global reputation for location-based agricultural research. Reporting directly to the Vice-President – Research, you will drive strategic partnerships, shape policy, and secure funding while fostering collaboration with government and community stakeholders. With a strong focus on research excellence, you will mentor emerging scholars, drive large-scale research initiatives, and position the Institute at the forefront of agricultural innovation.

This professorial leadership position is ideal for an accomplished researcher with a distinguished track record in agricultural science. Your leadership will ensure the continued success of the Institute, strengthening its role as a key driver of sustainable, technology-driven farming solutions.

Position Requirements

A doctoral qualification (PhD) and substantial expertise in agriculture, with a distinguished professional standing and recognised accreditation.

A proven record of academic leadership, including the ability to build and guide high-performing, multidisciplinary teams within a complex organisational environment.

A national or international reputation for research excellence, demonstrated through high-impact publications, success in securing competitive research funding, and the establishment of strategic research collaborations.

An understanding of current professional and educational issues in higher education, supported by well-developed networks across industry, research, and government sectors.
