Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established over 50 years ago in response to a protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT.
What Will You Do?
In this role, you will be an integral and valued member of a highly skilled and high-performing Care & Protection/Family Law Practice. You will provide high-quality and culturally appropriate legal advice and representation to Aboriginal clients and assisting them in resolving their legal problems and litigation where required.
Each Day, You Can Expect To:
- Provide high-quality, culturally appropriate legal advice and representation to Aboriginal clients, managing complex legal matters.
- Stay updated on legal developments, maintain professional competence and mentor junior solicitors.
- Liaise with stakeholders, external agencies, and counsel to ensure effective handling of legal matters.
- Maintain orderly files, utilize legal systems, and adhere to ALS policies and ethical standards.
- Travel to regional locations as required, with a current driver’s license.
Who are we looking for?
You are a highly skilled and motivated individual with a thorough understanding of the cultural, social, and historical needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You will be able to demonstrate:
- Commitment to social justice principles and providing high-quality legal representation.
- Legal qualifications with a current Practising Certificate and at least 2 years of court advocacy experience in the relevant area of law.
- In-depth knowledge of legislation and relevant case law, practice, and procedures in both or either the Care and Protection and Family Law Jurisdictions.
- Strong communication, time management, legal research, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently or in a team, with a willingness to travel for work purposes.

We opened our doors in 1970 in Redfern as the first Aboriginal Legal Service in Australia – that makes us over 40 years old!
The ALS does legal work in Criminal law, children’s Care and Protection law and Family law.
We assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men, women and children through representation in court, advice and information, and referral to further support services.
