Darwin Northern Territory
Devise, plan and manage scientific research that informs key fisheries reform.
Support the development and administration of fisheries harvest strategies.
Visit remote coastal regions on research and commercial fishing vessels.
The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries was formed in August 2024 with the focus of growing the sector and maintaining the Territory’s reputation as a supplier of safe and quality seafood.
NT Fisheries delivers evidence-based management of fish stocks, the effective management of ecological risks and economic development of fishing, aquaculture and seafood businesses. As stewards of a public resource, the team aims to protect the NT’s aquatic resources whilst maximising social and economic benefits to the local community. This is achieved through management actions that consider and provide opportunities and benefits for the traditional, commercial, recreational and fishing tourism sectors
As a Senior Research Scientist your primary objective is to support and provide scientific information to the Chief Scientist, fisheries management and key stakeholders for sustainable and equitable management of fishery resources in the Northern Territory.
Your key responsibilities include leading research projects that test alternative fishing gears to develop scientific advice that will inform key fishery reforms, including the NT Barramundi Fishery. Additionally, you will analyse and interpret research results to provide support for the development and administration of fisheries harvest strategies, prepare external funding applications and publish results of research.
Working within a multi-disciplinary team you will develop strong relationships with all stakeholders including fishers, industry representatives, external funding agencies, Aboriginal representatives and colleagues in university and research institutions.
Located in Darwin, you will also be required to work in remote locations and onboard research and commercial fishing vessels.
To meet the challenges of this scientific role you require a degree qualification in fisheries science, or a related natural resource science supported by demonstrated skills and experience in planning and undertaking coordinated projects and fieldwork. Demonstrated experience in the development and administration of fisheries harvest strategies, competency in the application of statistical analysis and experimental design techniques, and a track record of publishing research findings in reports and scientific publications is essential.
A Master’s or PhD in fisheries science and experience in designing or testing fishing gear and equipment in a research setting would be well received.
In return, you will be rewarded with a competitive remuneration package including 11.5% superannuation, six weeks recreational and three weeks personal leave, an additional 3 days paid leave over Christmas, 17.5% annual leave loading and an opportunity to further develop your scientific career in fisheries science in the NT Public Sector.
