This Position: The Assistant Manager is responsible for supporting the store's daily operations, including overseeing staff, managing inventory, assisting customers, and ensuring a welcoming and organised shopping environment.

Role Duties and Responsibilities

Customer Service Management:

  • Ensure high standards of customer service are maintained.
  • Handle complex customer inquiries, complaints, and issues.

Sales and Merchandising:

  • Operating the cash register, handling cash, credit card payments, and providing receipts.
  • Support the Store Manager in achieving sales targets and maximizing profitability.
  • Oversee the implementation of merchandising strategies and promotional activities.
  • Monitor sales performance and suggest improvements.

Staff Supervision:

  • Assist in recruiting, training, and supervising store staff.

Inventory and Stock Control:

  • Manage inventory levels to ensure adequate stock while minimizing excess.
  • Oversee receiving, unpacking, and stocking of merchandise.
  • Conduct regular inventory audits and resolve discrepancies.
  • Manage stock returns process, including picking, packing and shipping of returns
  • Assist in preventing theft by closely monitoring the store, identifying vulnerable areas, and implementing effective loss prevention strategies

Financial Management:

  • Ensure accurate cash handling and financial reporting.

Store Operations:

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe store environment.
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and security regulations.
  • Oversee the maintenance and upkeep of store facilities.

Marketing and Community Engagement:

  • Support marketing initiatives and community outreach programs.
  • Organize and participate in store events and book signings.
  • Build and maintain relationships with local schools, libraries, and community groups.
Qualifications, Competencies & Experience

Essential

  • Minimum of 2-5 years of experience in a retail environment, with at least 1 year in a supervisory or management role.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in using retail management software and point-of-sale (POS) systems
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 15 kg.

Preferred

  • Previous experience in a bookshop or related industry.
  • A passion for books and reading.
  • Knowledge of current literature and trends in the book industry.
  • Experience with inventory management systems.
