The Role
These roles work within a technical team to understand, test, document and evaluate the opportunities that quantum technologies present for ASD. These roles will cover various quantum technologies including quantum sensing, quantum computing and quantum communications. However, given the dynamic nature of innovative technologies and their crossover with classical systems, successful applicants can expect engagement with other key technical areas of ASD including Cyber Security, Cryptology and Vulnerability Research.

ASD 6 Quantum Signals Technologist
Accountable under routine direction as part of a team to:
- Design, test, document and brief complex quantum technology experiments and explain how they integrate with or compare to classical technologies.
- Make independent decisions relating to their area of responsibility and inform team members of the reasoning behind the decisions.
- Identify and contribute to testing process improvement activities.
- Resolve problems using expertise in quantum technologies.
- Engage with key partners, taking the initiative to identify alternative courses of action.
- Interpret and comply with business processes and legislative, policy and regulatory frameworks.
About our Team
The Office of the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at ASD shapes ASD’s approach to Signals Intelligence and Cyber Security Capability. We position ASD to take advantage of the opportunities that innovative technologies present, while working to treat threats and mitigate technical/strategic surprise.
The team builds technical resilience and nurtures research/adoption of cutting edge capabilities and tradecraft by engaging with field leaders from our international partners, industry and academia, and experimentation with - and demonstration of - innovative technologies. Quantum technologies are an example of technologies we are focused on.
Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidates will:
- Have the aptitude to research and understand complex quantum physics phenomena, and apply the outcomes to new and unique use cases.
- Adapt to evolving objectives and context switches as developments bring to light new opportunities with innovative technologies like quantum.
- Work collaboratively with peers and lead junior staff within a technical team.
- Have the ability to overcome technical, resource and time challenges to deliver outcomes as part of a highly technical team.
- Have the ability to support engagement, learn from, and develop relationships with fellow Government, industry and academic partners.
ASD is seeking applicants to fill current and anticipated vacancies and to create a merit pool for future vacancies. In line with the Australian Public Service Commissioner’s Direction 2022, upon completion of the recruitment activity, the merit pool will be available to locations across Australia.
