As part of the Critical Minerals Trailblazer JCU have secured funding to undertake a high-profile research project” High-throughput neutron tomography core scanner for critical minerals resources”.

We are seeking to fill a full-time and two-year fixed-term position, located at the Townsville, Bebegu Yumba campus, Douglas. Remuneration at Academic Level A $94,829 - $101,477 per annum + up to 17% employer superannuation contributions.

What you can accomplish in the role

As part of a highly motivated team of researchers within the Economic Geology Research Centre (EGRU) you will apply your geological expertise to an emerging area of core scanning technology. Neutron tomography can provide 3D imaging, mineralogical and geochemical information with great promise for fast thorough characterization of ore deposits. As part of a multidisciplinary team involving scientists from JCU and ANSTO, you will undertake research focused on the full characterization of drill core using neutron tomography and investigate its application to the study of critical mineral deposits including their genesis, and exploration, metallurgical, geoenvironmental and geotechnical applications.

Working in collaboration with Earth and Environmental Science and Engineering researchers and ANSTO scientists, you will conduct research, develop and/or contribute to research publications as a member of a high performing team and ensure all key research outcomes and milestones are achieved in alignment with project timelines.

What you can bring to the role

You will have completed (or near completion) a PhD qualification or equivalent in Geology or related discipline with demonstrated experience in the field of mineral deposits and characterization of geological materials and a proven research publication track record. Previous experience undertaking instrumental characterization of geological materials including SEM, EPMA, X-Rays, 3D segmentation and visualization, synchrotron etc. will be seen favorably.
