As a company that places paramount importance on safety and regulatory compliance, we are looking for a highly skilled SDS technical writer to join our team. In this technical role, you will be responsible for authoring SDS documents for products that are manufactured across our work sites. You will work closely with internal teams and external agencies to maintain up-to-date and accurate Safety Data Sheets (SDS) that are essential for product safety and compliance.
About the Role: A Highly Technical, Compliance-Focused Opportunity!
As a SDS Technical Writer, you will be the technical expert responsible for the creation, review, and maintenance of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) in line with global and local regulatory requirements. You will apply your expert knowledge to ensure that all documentation is accurate and compliant with regulations such as GHS and WHS Act (QLD). You’ll collaborate with internal subject matter experts to ensure full technical accuracy across all documentation.
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Research and Analysis:
- Gather and analyze chemical compositions from raw material SDSs, hazard assessments, regulatory guidelines, and chemical property data to ensure accurate SDS authoring.
- SDS Creation: Develop and maintain SDS documents, including sections on identification, hazard communication, first aid measures, fire-fighting measures, accidental release measures, handling and storage, exposure limits and controls, physical and chemical properties, stability and reactivity, toxicity information, and regulatory information.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that the SDS complies with relevant regulations, such as GHS (Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals) and local regulations.
- Hazard Classification and Risk Assessment: Perform chemical hazard classification and risk assessments using internal compounding technical sheets, supplier SDS, COA’s, industry sourced toxicological data, chemical exposure guidelines, and regulatory frameworks to ensure correct hazard communication.
- Collaboration: Work closely with our laboratory, R&D team and other stakeholders to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the SDS
- Technical Documentation Management: Ensure all SDS documents are securely stored, accurately maintained, and managed in line with client confidentiality requirements.
- Technical Support: Provide technical expertise and guidance to internal teams regarding hazard communication and SDS content. Deliver training on proper SDS usage and safety procedures.
- Regulatory Monitoring: Stay up-to-date with changes in GHS (Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals) to proactively revise SDS as required.
About You:
- You will hold a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or similar science-related field.
- Queensland drivers licence.
- Minimum 2 years of recent experience in SDS authoring within chemical, cosmetics, food, or pharmaceutical industries.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
- Strong technical writing skills, with an ability to clearly articulate complex scientific and safety information.
- In-depth knowledge of GHS (Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals), and relevant local and international governing legislations (eg. EU CLP and REACH, US OSHA, Canada WHMIS, Japan JIS etc.)
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess complex chemical safety issues and develop practical solutions.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining accuracy in technical documentation.
- Excellent analytical and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate technical knowledge across a wide range of audiences.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects while maintaining a high level of technical accuracy and regulatory compliance.
