The principal functions of the Director of Public Prosecutions are to institute, prepare and conduct criminal cases on behalf of the Crown before the Supreme Courts and the Local Courts of the Northern Territory and the High Court of Australia.
The Office of Public Prosecutions invites applications from experienced and suitably qualified criminal lawyers, and those legal professionals who are eligible for admission as a barrister or solicitor of the High Court or of a Supreme Court of a State or Territory of Australia. The Office has several immediate vacancies at the SP1 level and maintains a talent pool of successful applicants to select from for future appointments.
These are challenging yet rewarding roles, your comprehensive knowledge of and experience in criminal law, practice and procedure and your advocacy and advanced communication skills will ensure the delivery of a professional criminal prosecution service to the people of the Northern Territory.
Crown Prosecutor
Key duties and responsibilities: Provide expert legal advice relating to the prosecution of complex prosecutions.
Appear in complex trials, appeals and pleas before the Supreme Court. Appear and/or junior in Court of Criminal Appeal proceedings. Conduct committal proceedings and contested summary prosecutions, preliminary examinations and related proceedings before the Local Court. Appear in complex summary hearings as required. Evaluate, screen and prepare briefs of evidence and recommend indictments in accordance with the Director’s guidelines. Appropriately consult, liaise, inform and negotiate with defence counsel, victims, the police officer-in-charge, court staff and the Witness Assistance Service.
Provide professional advice and support to other prosecutors and Police and promote a team environment. Act as a mentor and provide guidance to less experienced prosecutors.
Essential: Admitted or eligible for admission as a barrister or solicitor of the High Court or of a Supreme Court of a State or Territory of Australia. Demonstrated experience and knowledge in criminal law and advocacy with the ability to provide expert legal advice together with proven experience in the prosecution of complex matters including jury trials. Demonstrated high-level knowledge of the DPP Guidelines and Prosecution Policy, the Criminal Code (NT) and related legislation, and the procedures of the courts of the Northern Territory. Good working knowledge of Uniform Evidence Law.
High level oral and written communication and negotiation skills with demonstrated ability to effectively engage, negotiate and collaborate with other agencies, defence agencies, Courts, local communities, other external stakeholders and the general public. Ability to manage one's own legal practice in accordance with internal practices and procedures working with competing demands under pressure. An ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures together with an understanding of Aboriginal issues relevant to prosecution services.
