About the Role:
Peppercorn Recruitment has been engaged to search for a Senior Corporate Counsel (Australia) based in Brisbane to join an innovative and fast-paced global technology company.
Backed by household name global private equity players as well as multiple governments, this is an exciting opportunity to be part of a groundbreaking project, where you will have a unique chance to shape the legal strategies and operations of the company while working at the forefront of technological advancements.
As Senior Corporate Counsel (Australia), this is a greenfields opportunity where you’ll report directly to the General Counsel in the US and will be responsible for leading the legal function in Australia.
You’ll play a critical role in managing the company’s legal affairs locally while collaborating with cross-functional teams globally. This role offers a dynamic, entrepreneurial environment, and you'll need to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving landscape where ambiguity is common, and the stakes are high.
Key Responsibilities:
- Set Up and Lead the Legal Function in Australia: Establish and manage the legal function, ensuring that the company is well-supported in its strategic and operational objectives.
- Create Legal Policies and Procedures: Develop contract templates, negotiation playbooks, and legal policies that streamline processes, enable innovation, and ensure compliance.
- Legal Support for All Areas of Business: Oversee legal work related to commercial contracts, employment, industrial relations, regulatory compliance, and board-related matters.
- Train and Advise Internal Teams: Provide training on a variety of legal issues and act as a trusted adviser to internal teams, ensuring legal considerations are embedded in business decisions.
- Support Strategic Business Initiatives: Offer legal and strategic advice on complex and strategic issues, helping the company navigate its ambitious growth goals.
- Negotiate and Manage Commercial Agreements: Manage commercial contracts, particularly related to construction, partnerships, and supply chains.
- Risk Management: Work with senior management to provide regular insights into the company’s legal risk profile and offer proactive legal guidance.
- External Legal Counsel Management: Manage and collaborate with external legal counsel in Australia, ensuring cost-effective and high-quality legal support.
Ideal Candidate:
- Experience: Significant post-qualification experience (at least 8 years), preferably within a large or medium-sized corporate or commercial law firm or in-house legal role.
- Industry Experience: Strong experience in drafting and negotiating complex commercial agreements within the construction, projects, finance or technology sector.
- Legal Expertise: A strong background in corporate law, regulatory compliance, and contract law, with the ability to handle complex legal challenges in a fast-growing company.
- Communication & Leadership Skills: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to break down complex legal issues into clear and actionable advice for non-legal teams.
- Strategic and Pragmatic: Ability to think strategically and balance the need for compliance with a pragmatic, solution-oriented approach to enable business growth.
- Qualifications: A relevant tertiary qualification in law and a current Australian Practicing Certificate.
- Confidentiality: Experience in handling highly confidential and sensitive information with discretion and professionalism.
- Leadership: Proven ability to lead a growing legal function and work effectively across different teams in a global environment.
Benefits:
- Top of market salary, annual bonus and option plan (bearing in mind the organisation is pre-IPO and with a view to listing).
- Flexible work arrangements (3 days in office, 2 from home)
- Talented, highly-engaged and results driven colleagues
- The opportunity to be at the ground-floor of one of the world's most exciting and innovative technology companies as it ramps up for growth.
If you have a passion for technology, innovation, and legal strategy, and you’re looking for a unique opportunity to be part of an industry-transforming and generational company, this is one not to miss.
