General:

Work with a very high profile Federal Government agency.

Security level - mandatory: minimum federal Baseline security clearance required (NV1 a ‘plus’.).

Location – Sydney CBD office.

WFH – generally, 2 days in office / 3 days WFH each week.

Start – estimated: late May 2025.

Initial contract duration – to end May 2026.

Extensions possible – up to an additional 24 months.

The Role:

This Linux Engineer role will be part of the Technology and Platform Solutions Team. It is for a Linux Engineer who is very experienced and able to implement, manage and retire the infrastructure (including physical, virtual, networking and cloud infrastructure) that supports digital services.

Key duties:

• Run and maintain the client's core IT services, upon which all other IT services are based. This includes data centres, servers, virtualization, operating systems, storage, backup, time, logging, email, domain name resolution, web proxying and security.
• Securely manage client's connections to/from the internet and other government networks.
• Perform daily security monitoring and risk mitigations across the client’s IT environment.

You will be part of a team that has the responsibility for the design, implementation, maintenance and security of:

• Virtualisation (VMware),
• Block and file storage (Pure Storage),
• Backup (Cohesity) and
• Index/search (Splunk).

• DNS (BIND),
• NTP,
• SMTP (Postfix),
• Web proxying (Squid and Forcepoint/Websense), and
• RSA SecurID.

• All of the agency’s Linux hosts (~600) primarily Ubuntu with some RHEL.
• Base infrastructure services consumed by other IT teams such as:
• Core applications relied on by the entire agency such as:

You will be working in a secure on-premise environment, and work will include working on business driven and internally driven projects.

You also will work closely with other technical teams (Development, Platforms, Networks, Windows, Service Desk) to identify and resolve issues and escalations

Mandatory Technical skills:

• Prolonged experience managing a large fleet of Linux hosts, and providing organisation wide base infrastructure & core services
• Ansible automation skills for infrastructure deployment & management
• Experience in problem solving, troubleshooting, documentation & root cause analysis Desirable
• A deep understanding of Linux, incl: networking, auditd, SElinux/AppArmor, IPTABLES/NFTABLES, TLS, PKI
• Experience in implementing the ACSC's Essential Eight in a Linux environment.
