About the role: As an Aboriginal Mental Health Peer Worker you will get to use your Certificate IV Mental Health Peer Work to provide timely, non-clinical, practical psychosocial support to people who have attempted suicide or are experiencing a suicidal crisis. Using the Peer Worker Framework and trauma informed practices you will help to restore hope and personal power and inspire people to move forward with their lives through sharing stories of recovery.

This position will apply the concepts of social and emotional wellbeing, mental health, and healing to support First Nations participants.

The Buttery’s Way Back NSW North Coast program provides up to 3 months of assertive trauma-informed outreach, co-creating safety and support plans and linking participants to available clinical and community-based services.

Hours and location: This is a part time role of 30 hours per week based in Tweed. The role is mobile and operates across the program’s footprint. A vehicle is available from a central location for work in the community. The role is funded until 30th June 2026 with potential for extension.

Qualifications and checks

  1. Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work. (Only candidates with this qualification will be considered.)
  2. Current and valid Driver's Licence with an ability to undertake regular travel throughout the program footprint
  3. A satisfactory Criminal Record Check, Working with Children Check
  4. Indigenous to the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community. Under s25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991, there is a genuine occupational requirement for the incumbent to be Indigenous to the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Community.

Professional skills and experience

  1. Two years’ work experience in a community services, welfare, or mental health field with experience in the delivery of mental health support and/or a suicide prevention service to people who have attempted suicide, severe mental health issues and complex psychosocial needs in both acute and no acute settings
  2. Demonstrated experience providing support from a peer work framework including case management support for persons with complex needs and providing trauma-informed care
  3. Ability to motivate highly disengaged participants in designing and achieving personal goals.
  4. Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft suite, a variety of databases, data entry skills, writing case notes, video conferencing tools such as Teams

This role will be remunerated at SCHCDS Level 2 ($33.41 - $36.46ph) based on qualifications and experience, with access to salary packaging to potentially increase your take home pay by another 5k.
