Space Sector Engagement Lead
Executive Level 1
Ongoing
Adelaide
Position Overview
The Space Sector Engagement Lead, reports to the National Security and Space Partnerships Lead (EL2) and works with the Australian space sector and government, to build relationships that will enable the Bureau to deliver value and impact for their operations. Through this role, you will strengthen the relationship between the Bureau and its partners such as the Australian Space Agency, by supporting the development of new opportunities.
Your primary focus will be on services related to space weather; space launch, flight and return; and space situational awareness. You will work closely with the Australian Space Weather Forecasting Centre (ASWFC) and Spaceflight Operations team to ensure space sector needs are reflected in their operations and products. You will assist our Spaceflight Operations Manager to develop and expand the new Spaceflight Weather Service ("Spaceflight") in support of the Australian spaceflight sector. A strong teamwork and collaborative approach will be essential to this. You will also deliver education and training to these sectors on space weather, to help them understand its impacts.
The ASWFC and Spaceflight ways of working and processes are continuously being improved, and for Spaceflight, some are still being established. Your thought leadership and willingness to contribute to the direction of these capabilities is important.
As part of this role, you will promote the Bureau brand, fostering an enhanced understanding of the Bureau's role in the space sector and the needs of its customers. You will also initiate, establish and maintain strong strategic relationships with the Australian Space Agency and key internal stakeholders, developing a comprehensive understanding of the Bureau's impact on the wider context in which it operates. This includes participating in working groups and committees.
The Space Sector Engagement Lead maintains close relationships with other Bureau teams, including the Defence Engagement and Earth Observations areas, who have different relationships with the sector.
The ideal Space Sector Engagement Lead will be self-motivated, with strong engagement and leadership skills and an ability to work independently. You will bring several years' experience working with or within the space sector and an understanding of the impacts space weather and terrestrial weather can have for these systems. Ideally you will have experience in business or opportunity development, pricing and knowledge of international relationships and Australian Government policy relevant to this sector. You will also have excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
You will be expected to work outside of standard business hours from time to time to attend meetings with international counterparts or to support response during significant space events (along with other Program and Bureau staff). Time in lieu or overtime would be available on a case-by-case basis. Some interstate travel will be required to engage with sectors and Bureau staff.
The ASWFC is based at Lot Fourteen in Adelaide, and our Spaceflight Weather Service is in Canberra. Applicants are particularly encouraged from these locations, but applications from any capital city will be considered. Relocation is not required.
Application Closing Date: Thursday 3 April 2025
