Principal Solicitor Litigation - Multiple Opportunities Available, Ongoing and Temporary positions available, based in Sydney CBD or Parramatta

Location: Sydney CBD or Parramatta, flexible working options available
Grade: Clerk Grade 11/12
Salary Range: $145,378 - $168,130+ plus superannuation
Employment Type: Multiple opportunities, ongoing and temporary, Full-Time, and Part-Time.

Exciting opportunities are available to work for a regulator in regulatory prosecutions, civil enforcement, and administrative reviews. The Department of Customer Service Legal team supports a range of regulators, such as NSW Fair Trading, SafeWork NSW, State Insurance Regulatory Authority and Building Commission NSW. We currently have roles that will principally support each of:

  • SafeWork NSW;
  • NSW Fair Trading; or
  • Building Commission NSW.

As a Principal Lawyer Litigation, (Grade 11/12) these roles will principally work in prosecutions and administrative review litigation.

Primarily providing legal services to one of the above regulators, you will be working in an interesting and fast paced regulatory environment, joining a passionate and motivated group of professionals providing independent, professional legal advice and legal services on a broad range of matters.

There are a number of ongoing and temporary full-time and part-time opportunities available in a vibrant and supportive team. A talent pool may be created for future opportunities

  • Remuneration of $145,378 - $168,130+ super & leave loading, commensurate with experience.
  • Based in Sydney CBD or Parramatta Square

The person in this role will need to:

  • Provide advice to Senior Executives and Investigation teams on investigations and enforcement strategy including the exercise of statutory powers, evidence, negotiated regulatory outcomes, the conduct of hearings and penalties.
  • Provide accurate, timely and clear legal advice in undertaking prosecutions and litigation in areas of law administered by the regulators including, statutory interpretation, legal research, legal drafting, prosecution and advocacy to support achievement of business objectives.
  • Conduct litigation or coordinate external legal representation and represent the regulators before courts and tribunals, committees, advisory bodies and working parties, to ensure optimum outcomes in the resolution of legal matters for clients and the department.

To be successful in this role it is essential that you are a motivated and effective communicator with great initiative, who can work with diverse clients, other lawyers, and can manage competing deadlines and priorities.

About You:

  • You will hold Bachelor of Laws or equivalent degree qualification and have relevant post qualification experience as a lawyer.
  • You are admitted as a legal practitioner of the Supreme Court of New South Wales and hold a current unrestricted practising certificate as a lawyer.
  • You will have strong analytical ability, lateral thinking and problem-solving skills including strong negotiation, advocacy and stakeholder management capability.
  • You have an ability to provide quality independent legal advice and are able to confidently manage legal risk prioritising time sensitive matters, handling large volumes of work and managing deadlines.

You will be able to demonstrate sound knowledge of two or more of the following (depending on the role):

  • NSW Fair Trading: regulatory prosecutions, criminal law, consumer protection law and administrative law and NSW Court and tribunal practice and procedure;
  • SafeWork NSW: regulatory prosecutions, criminal law, work health and safety law, administrative law and NSW Court and tribunal practice and procedure;
  • Building Commission NSW: regulatory prosecutions, criminal law, building and construction law and administrative law and NSW Court and tribunal practice and procedure.

Salary Grade 11/12, with the base salary for this role starting at $145,378 base plus superannuation
