Our participants, Our people, Our purpose

Currently, there are around 4.3 million Australians with a disability. The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) implements the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), which is one of the biggest social reforms in the country since Medicare. As an Agency, we support more than 600,000 participants with a significant and permanent disability, and the families and carers of those living with disability. For many Australians, this will be the first time they receive the disability support they need. The NDIA is designed to enhance the quality of life and increase economic and social participation for people with disability and will mean a peace of mind for every Australian.

A new role awaits

The Legal Practice and Capability (LPC) Branch is seeking experienced and driven APS5 Legal Operations professionals to join the NDIA, as part of the high performing Legal Operations team.

We are seeking excellent communicators with well-developed interpersonal skills, and the ability to develop and maintain stakeholder relationships. You will demonstrate active listening and accessible communication, with a commitment to inclusion and diversity. You will demonstrate flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing environments and new challenges.

The Legal Practice and Capability (LPC) Branch provides strategic and operational support to the Agency’s legal function for the Chief Counsel and General Counsel Divisions. The Legal Operations team supports the NDIA legal function with intake, processing, triage and allocation of Administrative Review Tribunal (ART) applications and requests for legal advice from NDIA business areas. The team also has accountability for the NDIA legal response coordination of FOI requests and complaints related to the ART function.

Where you can add value

The APS5 Legal Operations role has considerable contact with internal and external stakeholders, including NDIS participants, Administrative Review Tribunal (ART) lawyers and case managers. You will be required to communicate and provide advice on a range of matters to resolve moderately complex to complex enquiries. You will be required to undertake administrative and operational tasks using your sound working knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, procedures and other guidance material to support the NDIA Legal function.

Responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to:

  • Analysing and assessing requests for legal advice from NDIA business areas; assessing ART Applications received by the NDIA.
  • Creating and updating records and filing supporting documentation in NDIA business systems.
  • Preparing comprehensive ART case summaries to support matter management and allocation to ART case managers.
  • Preparing and filing Tribunal documents as required for ART applications within statutory time frames.
  • Providing support for interlocutory applications and instructing internal lawyers to resolve or progress them
  • Assessing and responding to risk from processes, including in terms of privacy considerations and priority.
  • Researching and drafting responses for complaints, Ministerial and other documents as required.

Desirable for the role:

  • Paralegal or similar (law student / legal admin) background.
Enough about us, let’s talk about you

Our ideal candidate will have adaptable communication and people skills, with a proven ability to build relationships and collaborate in a person-centred and participant-centred manner. You will have the ability to handle a variety of tasks, managing sensitive information and working flexibility to adapt to changing environments and new challenges.

In line with the values and mission of the NDIA, you will have a positive contemporary attitude to people with disability, along with understanding and knowledge of disability and its impact on individuals. This role will provide you with opportunities to make a real difference in the lives of people with a disability and contribute to the success of the NDIA for generations to come.
