About the Role:

The purpose of this position is to provide technical support to staff and students in the Animal Studies Department. This will include the care of scientific laboratories, the Animal Facility, preparing practical classes and maintaining practical classrooms and consumables.

Duties:
  • Maintain preparation laboratories, student laboratories, classrooms and MP Animal Facility to Industry standards and according to MP policies and procedures, legislative and licensing requirements.
  • Provide technical support to staff and students during class times.
  • Daily care of the animals in the Animal Facility, record keeping, compliance and reporting including veterinary care of animals when required.
  • Rostering Animal Facility casual staff.
  • Planning, setting up, cleaning up and demonstrating practical procedures.
  • Collecting, preparing and/or testing samples.
  • Maintaining, calibrating, cleaning and testing sterility of equipment.

Skills and Experience Required:
  • Degree or qualification in relevant discipline and/or demonstrated experience in operation of a scientific or medical laboratory
  • Highly developed organisational and communications skills and ability to work harmoniously in a team environment contributing to team outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to assist staff and students during practical classes.
  • A sound understanding of Workplace Health & Safety standards and risk management in a Laboratory environment and in the Animal Facility.
  • A sound understanding of Code of Practice for Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes.
