About Newcastle Meals on Wheels

At Newcastle Wheels Meals on Wheels, we have supported elderly people in our local communities for over 60 years with nutritional nourishment and a network of supporting volunteers. At the heart of our organisation is a mission to work in our local communities with ageing Australians, supporting them to live independently in their homes where they want to be.

The Role

Our Social Support Worker role involves coordinating social activities, promoting the Meals on Wheels Wellness Program, assisting with program development for our participants, guiding and recruiting volunteers and managing digital communication schedules. The ideal candidate should have experience in program coordination, strong organisational and communication skills. This position offers the opportunity to positively impact the community, work in a supportive environment, and receive professional development and benefits.

Flexible hours over the week, Monday to Friday. Based in Newcastle, some travel to other areas required.

Key Responsibilities:

• Driving clients to assist them with daily tasks such as shopping or appointments
• Providing essential social support to our elderly community
• Assist frail people with physical barriers to remain independent in their homes.
• Assist people to get out and about in the community
• Assist people get to and from appointments
• Helping implement innovative projects to help our elderly clients stay independent in their own home. I.e., tech support.
• Keeping clients company and providing positive social support and build confidence
• Observing clients and promptly communicate significant changes in their needs to management.

Qualifications:

• Experience in social services or community support
• Strong organisational and planning skills
• Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Proficient in digital communication tools
