About the Organisation
Derby Aboriginal Health Service (DAHS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service (ACCHS) providing holistic primary health care services to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in Derby and surrounding communities. DAHS provide a wide range of innovative public health programs in addition to direct comprehensive primary health care services.
About the Position
The position is responsible for providing primary health care services to clients at the clinic and in the community focusing on from birth to 15 years of age. Ensure the focus of care is on the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients within the context of their cultural identity and social circumstances. To work as part of the DAHS team in providing a quality and client focused environment.
Key Responsibilities for this position are:
The scope of this position will include, but is not limited to:
Duties
- Participant in developing and implementing programs to enhance the health and wellbeing of children 0 to 15 years of age.
- Perform clinical duties, as part of the maternal and child health team, in all areas of the health service.
- Perform Medicare benefits schedule items for health checks (715), GP management plans (721,723) for children 0 to 15 years of age. DOH Enhanced Aboriginal Child Health Checks for children 0 – 5 years.
- Provide education to clients in disease prevention, management of health conditions and treatment requirements. .
- Participate in the development, presentation, evaluation and written reports of health programs and services.
- Promote DAHS service areas: Sexual Health, Maternal and Child Health, Women’s Health and the SEWB services to clients and initiate referrals.
- Provide support and assistance to visiting Specialists, Allied Health Staff and other health agencies.
- Work with external agencies to deliver best practice client care including: Community Health, Mental Health, Department of Child Protection and Hospital Services.
- Assist in client follow up and liaise with other agencies when necessary.
About You
To be considered for this position, you must have:
- Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulatory Authority – (AHPRA) as a Registered Nurse with at least 2 years post graduate child health experience.
- Practice within clinical standards and quality of care, which is effective, efficient and in accordance with best practice and agreed standards and policies.
- Demonstrate knowledge of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations.
- Have the ability to function as a team member and the capacity to work without supervision.
- Possession of or progression towards an appropriate post-graduate qualification in Child Health.
- Demonstrated knowledge, competence and attitudes required to provide Primary Health Care nursing within a patient centred and culturally appropriate approach to care.
- Are able to work for short periods under extreme weather conditions when on outreach and community visits.
- National Police Clearance
- WA Working with Children’s Check
- Current driver’s license
- Covid-19 vaccinated
- Current First Aid/CPR
Ideally, in addition to the above, we are looking for someone who has:
- Knowledge of the Enhanced Aboriginal Child Health Check.
- Previous experience in primary health care
- Hold a current Immunisation Certificate or working towards certification

Candidates must be able to demonstrate an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
About the Benefits
